Scott #1 Brown [1847 5c Franklin] Used with VF appearance: four large, even margins. Extremely thin paper. Slight surface wear and a couple very minor "dents" in the edge of the margin, all typical of this stamp and the more fragile thin paper. Neat orange-red grid cancellation. An attractive, properly priced example. (Scott 2024 $425 for most common stamp color shade.)

Scott #1a [1847 5c dark brown Franklin] Used VF with light, indistinct blue handstamped cancellation. Four ample margins, fully clear on all sides. This example is in the "dark brown family", but is most likely the grayish (dark) brown shade noted in Scott under #1a, but I have priced this stamp as the most common color of #1a. To put the value into perspective, the Scott 2024 value for the most common (dark brown) color of #1a is $525 plus $40 for a blue handstamped cancellation. However, the grayish brown is listed at $625, plus the cancellation premium. A nice example of a stamp that is missing from most collections.

Scott #9 [1852 1c blue Franklin Type IV] Mint with partial gum, hinge remnant. Enormous margin at top, but in at right and bottom, and large incursion at left. Very slight bend and slight aging. Based on how I acquired this stamp, I suspect that it was lost in the back of a desk drawer for one hundred years or more before coming into the hands of a collector. Though the left margin leaves something to be desired, it is an example of how people had difficulty separating these imperforate stamps back in the early 1850s. A reasonably priced example of an unused stamp that is 168 years old! (Scott 2021 value $725 for full gum and $225 for no gum.)

Scott #9 [1852 1c blue Franklin, Imperforate, Type IV] Used with VF appearance, but is technically F-VF. Three clear to large margins; cuts in slightly at top. Unusually lightly canceled. Remarkably light inking which results in a very sharp and detailed engraving impression. An unusually attractive example. (Scott Specialized 2023 value $100.)

Scott #9 [1852 1c blue Franklin, Imperforate, Type IV] Used with Fine (two margins) centering, however with much nicer overall appearance. Left margin example with very large margin at left, very large margin at top (showing part of stamp above), right margin just into design, and bottom margin well into design. Both red and black face-free cancellations at lower right. A handsome example! (Scott Specialized 2024 value $100.)

Scott #9, 1852 1c blue Franklin Type IV horizontal pair. Used F-VF. Margins clear to just touching at top and showing top edge of adjacent stamp at bottom right. Light creasing and left stamp has tiny facial scuff. Very unusual light cancel in BROWN COLOR (Scott 2019 Specialized +$100 for cancel). (Scott 2020 $190.)

Scott #11 GROUP OF 6 COLORS [1855 3c dull red Washington, Imperforate, Type I (no inner frame line)] A group of 6 Used stamps with VF to F-VF to Fine appearance, but none with defects. All but one (an exceptionally dark color of stamp) are very lightly canceled. While I believe all are #11 (reds), one tends toward the orange range and could potentially be the scarcer #10 (but I have counted it as the lower price #11). A nice way to add some "color" to your collection!

Scott #11A [1855 3c dull red Washington, Imperforate, Type II (with inner frame line)] Used F-VF centered VERTICAL PAIR with upright, perfectly centered "[NE]WPORT R.I." Rhode Island town cancellation. (Rhode Island cancellations are less often seen than from the neighboring states.) Very attractive and vertical pairs not often seen. (Scott 2023 value for pair is $62.50.)
Scott #17 Black [1851 12c gray black Washington, Imperforate] The scarcer black color (instead of gray-black) listed by Scott. Mint, regummed (never hinged). Right sheet margin example, but no margins on other three sides (cut just at or inside frame lines). Possible tiny expert repair (it is sometimes difficult to be absolutely sure on a regummed stamp), but has sound appearance. I cannot detect any indication of faint cancellation or removed cancellation on this example (it can be very difficult on a black stamp). This appears to be an unused (no gum, then regummed) example. Offered without a certificate; returnable for full refund if a certificate from a recognized authority, obtained within one year of purchase, is contrary to this description, however the cost of such certificate is not refundable in this particular situation. (Scott 2021 Specialized VF No Gum values are $2100 for the gray black and $2500 for the black color.)

Scott #17 Black on Extremely Thin Paper [1851 12c gray black Washington, Imperforate] The scarcer black color (instead of gray-black) listed by Scott - this example almost seems to be slightly violet-black. Also, this is on extremely thin paper, which Scott lists. Used with F-VF appearance, but with large "flat" tear (i.e. within the plane of the paper, creating two overlapping flaps) as well as an ironed-out crease. The tear is not immediately obvious and at first just appears to be a tiny facial scrape visible between "TWELVE" and "CENTS". The iron-out crease is only found by close inspection. Large margin at left, ample at top, close/touching the outer frame line at right; and in at the bottom. (The cliches were placed very close together in the plate, resulting in naturally small-margined stamps.) Very light, neat black grid cancellation. While the defects do significantly reduce the value of this example, this extremely thin paper is so thin that it is amazing that the stamp has survived at all -- Scott seems to recognize this with a very high catalog value for the "very thin paper". An attractive example of a "rare" stamp that is seldom offered in any quality. Offered at a tiny percentage of catalog value! (Scott Specialized 2022 gray black value $260 and solid black $325, and with "very thin paper" $1750!!)

Scott #22 [1857 1c blue Franklin, Perf 15.5, Type IIIA] This example of Type IIIA is a B relief from Plate 11. The identification has been confirmed by an major expert in this issue. Used F-VF with three ample to large margins (bottom show part of next stamp!) and in at bottom (typical for this). Neat PAID / grid-in-circle cancellation to the side, leaving Franklin face-free. A very attractive example of a stamp that is hard to find in such nice quality. (Scott 2022 value for the standard Plate 4 example is $475; the Plate 11 is scarcer at $500.)

Scott #24 [1857 1c blue Franklin, Perf 15.5, Type V] Mint, ORIGINAL GUM with modest hinge remnant, HORIZONTAL PAIR, with Fine centering. Huge right margins, large bottom margins, just touching at left margins, and in at top margins. Left stamp has a thin spot and some blunted perfs at left. Right stamp has a facial tiny black spot near the A of POSTAGE, but is otherwise without any problems. Wonderfully fresh overall appearance with great color and correct gum. Mint multiples of these early issues have become quite scarce as they are broken up for sale as singles. (Scott Specialized 2021 value $280 as two singles or $300 as a pair.)

Scott #25 Rose Red [1857 3c (rose) Washington, Perf 15.5, Type I] Used with VF centering for this issue: large margin at left, frame lines visible top and bottom, and in at right. This stamp is quite scarce with nice centering: the Scott Catalogue states "25 is valued in the grade of Fine with perforations cutting or touching slightly on one or two sides." Neat, very light town cancellation. Great color and excellent perforations. An attractive example of a stamp that is missing from many collections (or if seemingly present, is often misidentified). Scott #25, 1857 3c rose Washington Type I. Used F-VF. Light cancel. Looks like a wide imperf straight edge at left, but there is actually a row of blind perfs at the edge of the design! An interesting and improbable accent piece! (Scott 2019 $175 for normal example.)
