United States: Stamps: Confederate (CSA) Facsimiles and Private Proofs
All items are guaranteed to be as described and may be viewed on approval. Payment plans are available.
Since at least the early 1900s, collectors and dealers have privately created "reprints" and "proofs" and a large number of facsimiles of CSA stamps. The reprints and proofs have sometimes been made with the intent of sharing information on sheet position / cliche differences, etc. The facsimiles were largely created to provide inexpensive images of CSA stamps to a wide range of novice collectors who could never afford to have the real stamps. Several printings were made with differing papers, back printing, etc. and have only recently (ca. 2017) been well documented in the literature. More recently (2000 onward?) facsimiles / reproductions have been made of the facsimiles -- all that I have seen are lightly marked "Facsimile" on the reverse. The collecability of the facsimiles, and even more so their reproductions, is up for debate. However, since they do exist and because unscrupulous sellers might try to defraud novice collectors with them, I believe that it is useful for properly marked items to be available for their educational and reference value as long as they are correctly described and at a nominal price to cover their cost of handling.
Confederate States 10c Black Jefferson Davis "essay", imperforate, VF. Privately printed (possibly attributable to August Dietz?). A stunning Confederate accent piece!

Confederate Facsimiles: Group of 12 "mint". Sometimes described as reprints, these are facsimiles made for collectors (I believe that these date from the 1950s), but they are still quite collectible. All have back printing "Facsimile / No. xxx", however this group contains at least five different types / colors of backprinting. The top row has been backprinted ONCE with numbers 202 and 205 in dark gray, 207 in black, 211 in blue gray, and 212 in light gray. The middle row has been backprinted ONCE IN WHITE (I may have previously accidentally offered such items as not having backprints) with numbers 200, 209, and 213. The third row has been backprinted TWICE: 201 and 204 in dark gray and white; 203 and 208 in light gray and white. The white backprinting is extremely hard to see. All are on varying grades of coarse yellowish paper except 213 which is on good quality bright white paper. I do not know for sure, but I suspect that the various backprinting versions of these exist for other numbers as well -- it would make for an interesting study.

Confederate Facsimiles: Group of 14 "mint". Sometimes described as reprints, these are facsimiles made for collectors (I believe that these date from the 1950s). On the back each bears the text "Facsimile / No. XX" (numbered 1 to 14). While these initially look Imperforate, they are die cut but just held together in a block by tiny breaks in the cutting. The 12-block is intact, but weak due to the very tiny connectors. The pair was originally attached somewhere along the bottom of the 12-block. Ungummed on yellowish-white paper. All of consistent printing quality and appearance on thick white paper. All excellent quality with full margins. These are quite collectible. I have never before seen this type with die-cutting and the tiny connectors (breaks in the die cutting).

Ten Cent Davis Private Reprintings. Three different: deep green, ultramarine, and gray blue, imperforate, ungummed, VF. We are not sure exactly when these were produced; they may have been printed from the original officially ordered plates in the 1930s.

CSA Scott #6/7 Five Cent Davis. Private "Springfield" or "Tatham" facsimile with "Facsimile / No. 205" printed on reverse in dark gray. Color similar to issued color, but on coarse yellowish paper. The Springfields were distributed by the Tatham Stamp Company from the early 1930s into the 1940s. At first they had no text on the back; per the Confederate Handbook, after the first printing they bore on the reverse either "Facsimile" or "Facsimilie" (sic). Some printings also had the Scott numbering of the pre-1940 numbering system (i.e. starting at #200). The color of the back-printing can vary with the printings. Note that the "Swiss fakes" of the 1970s have similar appearance, with a Facsimile marking on reverse, but the "Swiss fakes" back-printing used modern Scott numbers (i.e. starting with #1). Mint VF (ungummed) 4-block, lightly hinged on top pair and never hinged on lower pair. Though the Springfields were originally sold as singles, blocks, and sheets of 25, nowadays blocks are not often offered. Interesting and attractive.

CSA Scott #6/7 Five Cent Davis. Typographed FAKE that looks like the "Springfield" or "Tatham" facsimiles, but it has been typographed (letterpress printed) and the design is slightly taller than the "Springfield" facsimile. There is no back-printing. It also bears a bogus "cancellation". Yellowish, rough paper very similar to some of the "Springfields". I have not found any references in the literature to this fake creation. Since the genuine stamp is common, this was surely intended as a low-cost "packet filler". While this fake should have very modest financial value, it may be important for a reference collection.

Scott #11/12 facsimile "mint". Sometimes described as reprints, these are facsimiles made for collectors (I believe that these date from the 1950s), but they are still quite collectible. Back printing "Facsimile / No. xxx" with 211 in blue gray. On coarse yellowish paper. I do not know for sure, but I suspect that the various backprinting versions of these exist; compare to what you have.

Confederate Facsimile: Scott #13 "mint", VF, light bend. Sometimes described as reprints, these are facsimiles made for collectors (I believe that these date from the 1950s). On the back each bears the text "Facsimile / No. XX" (numbered 1 to 14) -- this is 13. While these initially look Imperforate, they are die cut but just held together in a block by tiny breaks in the cutting. Ungummed on yellowish-white paper. Typical, for these facsimiles, printing quality and appearance on thick white paper. Excellent quality with full margins. These are quite collectible. This type, with die-cutting and the tiny connectors (breaks in the die cutting), seems to be scarcer.

Confederate Reproductions of Facsimiles: Group of 12 imperforate "sheets" of 25 "stamps" each. These are modern, crudely made, REPRODUCTIONS of the 1950s facsimiles, obtained on the open market (not from the maker, who is unknown to me). The word "Facsimile" is printed on the back of each "stamp". Total of 300 "stamps". These are offered only for their educational and reference value. Would be a useful addition to a forgery reference collection and also would be useful to educate other collectors, such as stamp club members, of the kinds of things to watch out for.
