This type of cancellation was used at small places that did not have an actual full post office, but where a mail carrier or train would pick up and drop off mail. Such letters would later receive the dated postmark of the next town (or railway post office car) it transited that had a full post office. This style of cancellation is rare seen on commemorative stamps, especially this very early commemorative issue, because there was very little distribution of the early commemoratives beyond the full post offices. Quite unusual! |

214 [1938 3-1/2 mk New Finland; Finland / Sweden / U.S. JOINT ISSUE] Right PLATE BLOCK as part of a Lower Right Corner BLOCK OF TEN. NEVER HINGED with VF/XF centering. The block has been folded vertically and horizontally (between the 4th and 5th rows of the block), but is strong and looks great. Plate number "5-1938 No 352". This is an important -- and early -- stamp issue for Joint Issue collectors. Plate blocks of this issue are remarkably hard to find; I believe that this is only the second or third plate block of this stamp that I have had in 50 years. Though as a single stamp, this issue is common in Mint Hinged condition, nowadays NH examples are much harder to find. The break-up value as ten NH singles is $28 (and Facit 2014 value for ten NH singles is SEK 350), this block is tremendously scarcer than that. |
