United States: National Parks Passport Series Stamps: Original Rouletted Issues

Officially issued and sold by the U.S. National Park Service as a NON-required souvenir type of "stamp" that was intended to be affixed into a passport book that could also be purchased from the Park Service. Dated "cancellation" handstamps were/are present at each park office which could be used to "stamp" a passport book, with or without a Passport Series Stamp affixed. The annual series started in 1986 and continues as of this time (2016).

The 1986-1993 stamps were originally issued looking like postage stamps with "serpentine roulette" die-cutting. The original stamps were sold pre-placed in a black Showgard-style (split back) stamp mount that was placed on the bottom half of a card measuring 70 x 126 mm. The bottom portion of this card (70 x 65 mm), with descriptive text about the park location, was to be separated from the top and affixed (how?) into the passport book. Alternatively, the stamp mount could be removed from the card and affixed into the book. The stamp itself has "invisible" gum and could also be removed from the mount and affixed directly into the book.

Sometime after 1993, the original 1986-1993 stamps were reprinted in a sheet form; subsequent issues were only produced in the new sheet form. Each sheet contains ten stamps and has fine line-rouletting separations. The later sheet-style of stamps are apparently all still available (surely some subsequently further reprinted) from the National Park Service.

Due to their ephemeral nature, the original vesions of the 1986-1993 stamps appear to be fairly scarce and seldom offered, especially as the full card with both parts intact in VF quality.
