1938 King Haakon VII essay for 1938 Tourism issue. Red Brown. Imperforate and gummed, NH VF. The least "touristy" of the 1938 Tourism essays, this design was perhaps being suggested as successor for the Haakon set of four that was issued in 1937-1938, but the war years intervened. This design is confirmed to be known perforated. However I have also seen three or less imperforate examples (but I did not record the colors) in addition to this one, but it is theoretically possible that a modest-margined single example such as this one could have been cut out of a perforated example. The known perforated colors are Red Brown (this color), Green, Dark Blue, and Violet. Only 50 or fewer perforated examples are believed to have reached the market; they are very seldom offered. The other 1938 designs sell from $165 to $250 each, but they have designs with much greater topical interest (though they are believed to exist in the same quantities).

International Reply Coupon (IRC): 100 öre 1929 Type C (London UPU Congress 1929) with only "C22" in upper right corner, smaller text in lower corners, and text differences on reverse. "NORVEGE - NORGE" printed in blue and denomination "100 ÖRE" printed in blue (even though should have been "ØRE"). Even though this is the "1929 type", this type/denomination was being sold well into the 1960s (maybe even the early 1970s), even after the 1964 "Vienna" Type D was released. This example was sold and postmarked on left side at "OSLO / OKERN." 29 May 1969. This is in "Mint" (NH) Postmarked VF condition and was never redeemed for stamps to mail a letter. (If it had been redeemed to mail a letter -- thus "Used" -- there would be another postmark, on the right side.) Norwegian examples of the 1929 Type are remarkably hard to find!

360 [6 May 1958 25 øre emerald King Olav V] Unaddressed COMPLETE (for the stamps issued that day, just this one) FIRST DAY COVER with very clear "6-5-58" OSLO cancellations. The stamp is VF and the cover is very fresh. This is a SCARCE first day cover; the 2024 Facit value is SEK 1200. To the best of my recollection this is only the third or fourth FDC of this stamp that I have been able to offer in 50 years.

"NORGE / 1814-1914 / JEG VIL VÆRGE / MIT LAND" Norwegian Flag in blue and red, text in reverse (white) on a background of blue vertical lines, and with blue frame ornaments. Perforated 11.5. This is a ca.1914 patriotic label, without any postal or official connection to my knowledge. The text translates to "I will defend my country". 1914 was the 100th anniversary of the adoption of the Norwegian Constitution. (The events of 1814 leading to the constitution make for interesting reading; there is a good article on Wikipedia.org.) This label was usually used on the backs of mailed envelopes, where they sometimes received an accidental postmark, but usually were left uncanceled and thus today they are almost always found without gum (value about $2). In 50 years, I have only found one group of four examples with full original gum, never hinged -- this is from that group of four. NH condition is quite scarce in my experience. F-VF centering.

B38-41 [1944 National Assistance "People at Work" (Homefront) semi-postal set] Used VF set on 1 December 1944 FIRST DAY COVER with unofficial KONGSVINGER town cancellations (instead of the usual Oslo cancellations). Unlike a few towns, unofficial first day cancellations from Kongsvinger are NOT often seen. Unaddressed. Cover was folded in quarters, but away from the stamps. There is a blue, circular Kongsvinger [and silhouette of the town] letter seal label on the reverse, also creased from the cover folding -- I have never before seen this letter seal / label in 50 years! A somewhat scarcer first day cover; 2024 Facit value, for normal Oslo cancellations, is SEK 300. Interestingly, used examples of these four stamps canceled in the proper period -- which these are -- have a Facit catalog value of SEK 280! At this price one could collect this for the first day cover or for the used stamps!

"Adams Expres" Kristiania 10 øre pink and black and 20 øre green and black GUTTER PAIR. Mint VF, moderately hinged with partial reinforcement of the gutter perforations as appropriate. Issued by the Adams Expres company in Norway, probably in the 1910s or 1920s (even Brofos was unable to specify the issue date). The Adams company as related to the same or similar company in København and probably many other large cities of the world. Printed in sheets of 90 stamps: forty of the 20 ore on the left (4 columns of 10), then a gutter column, and fifty of the 10 ore on the right (5 columns of 10). This unusual plate arrangement makes possible rare horizontal gutter pairs with the 20 on left and 10 on right. The design is of the company "dog carrying package" trademark. Both values are extremely difficult to obtain -- in 49 years, I have had less than ten total examples of singles and only two examples of gutter pairs. The one other gutter pair example I had sold back in the 1980s (?); I have not found a record of that selling price. However, the last couple single stamps that I have had sold for approximately $300 per set. This is one the classic and most adorable of the Norwegian non-railway parcel stamps. It is always avidly sought after but is seldom offered.

Essay design similar to and related to Scott #B24 [1941 Norwegian Legion semi-postal] ca. 1941 ESSAY by Harald Damsleth (who was also the artist of the issued Scott #B24) for the "Norwegian Legion" semi-postal issue. Design in horizontal format; cliche 32 x 17 mm, in orange red, on gummed 105 x 90 mm paper. Original drawing is in the Norwegian Postal Museum. Very seldom offered and in extremely strong demand from collectors of WWII-era and Germany-Occupied Countries material. [The Norwegian Legion was formed by Nazi sympathizers to fight alongside the Nazis against the Allied forces. Originally expected to have a more "glorious" role in Northern and Western Europe, the Legion ended up on the Eastern Front where they suffered greatly. This essay has always been scarce, but I suspect that many people in Norway would rather forget this chapter of Norwegian history, thus they are very seldom offered or displayed.]

Scott #93 PERFIN [1922 40 øre ultramarine Posthorn] Used VF ON COVER with O.M./&S. (O. Mustad & Sön) PERFIN right-reading from the front. Solo use on 16 August 1923 cover to the U.S., with KRISTIANIA text-machine cancellation "NORGES VAREMESSE / 2-9 SEPTEMBER 1923". The Mustad company was, and still is, a major manufacturer of fishing equipment; sent to "The Creek Chub Bait Co." in Garrett, Indiana, thus fishing thematic related -- a thematic for which it is quite hard to find such interesting postal history items. The 40 øre international letter rate had doubled from 20 on 1 Feb 1921 and increased again to 45 on 1 Sep 1924 (and later back down to 40 and then 30). This stamp was printed in July 1921, but apparently not placed into circulation (until the supply of the previous color of 40 øre stamps was exhausted) until February 1922, thus this stamp had an "intended rate life" of only about 2.5 years. I cannot recall ever having any private-company perfins on this stamp in 48 years; and only a couple perfins (on any stamp issue) from this era on covers sent to other countries. This unassuming cover is actually quite scarce!

1983 Edvard Grieg Europa Test Stamp design printed in 1986 by Norges Bank Seddeltrykkeri (Norwegian Banknote Printing Company) as a test and demonstration of new printing equipment. The design was apparently not first "discovered" by philatelists until 1997 and I had not recorded this color/type until around 2010. These are true test stamps, intended for internal purposes and were never officially made available to the public. These test stamps are rare and of interest to collectors of test stamps, composers and music, and Europa. The engraved design is taken from the 1983 EUROPA issue and pictures composer Edvard Grieg; with the country name, text, and denomination cut out. The sheet format (based on the limited items and images I have observed) for these test stamps was that, in the row, the outer (left and right) stamp was full imperforate, the next stamp in toward the center was partially perforated, and the innner stamps were fully perforated. Grieg portrait in Dark Ultramarine with full background of musical score in Carmine Red. Right-side-of-sheet partially perforated (perfed only on left side) single stamp. Partially perforated singles such as this are seldom offered as it meant breaking up the 3-strip showing all three perforation formats.

Local Booklet LH ?: 2010. Issued by the Fredrikstad Post Office. Contains a pane of two personalized stamps showing a painting by Øivind Sand. The personalized stamp FRAME is NK #PF5 / Scott #1557. I do not have any other listing information about this booklet and it is the only example I have ever seen.
Norwegian Missionary in Madagascar (Madagaskar) Local Post Stamps: NH VF reproduction souvenir sheet of 16 stamps, crudely printed to resemble the original 1894-1896 local post stamps. Each of the original four stamp designs / denominations is represented by four examples; each example has small differences (the originals were printed from crudely set hand-set type). The souvenir sheet, created by Norwegian philatelist Arne Bye in 1968 with only 200 souvenir sheets printed, states that these are "eftertrykk" (after-prints), but might be more appropriately termed photographic reproductions. With the original stamps (which are listed in the specialized catalogs) valued at hundreds of dollars each, this s/s of 16 stamps is as close as most collectors will get to owning examples. Each s/s is numbered; the placement on the paper and size of margins will vary (these were hand cut). These are rarely offered, but over the years, I have seen them sell -- and have sold them myself -- for over $100 in online auctions (when I have offered them, I have never started them for more than $50).

ca.1940s "R/S ROALD AMUNDSENS / BYGGEFOND" (building fund) picturing Amundsen, the polar explorer, and a sailing boat. Dull Blue on yellowish-white paper, perforated 12. I have not been able to determine the purpose of this label/seal, but I believe it to be a fundraising seal, probably for an Amundsen monument, museum, or perhaps the pictured boat. (Information welcome.) I have seen an example with a 1943 postmark, thus it was likely issued in the early 1940s, during WWII, and may even have been political in nature. Other than three 4-blocks from the Norm Gary collection, I have only had a couple singles in 45 years. Scarce. NH F-VF right margin 4-block.

King Haakon VII and Norwegian flag on 1909 copyrighted (F.H. ALT.) picture post card. Wonderful 4-color typographed (letterpress) card with extremely fine printing registration to properly present the colors. Appears to be produce in the U.S., for exclusively for sale in the U.S., and appears to be part of a large series of country and country-leader cards. Beautiful colors and of the highest quality printing. Mint VF, fresh, bright, and clean. In addition to being a great post card, it would make a wonderful frontispiece for a stamp album.

C1a [13 Jun 1927 Airmail Type I (first issue; indistinct frame line] Wonderful FIRST DAY COVER with "OSLO ULLEVÅL HAVEBY" 13 VI 27 sub-office cancellations. Transit canceled the next day with "OSLO BR. I" and then sent to England, with 16 June receiver on reverse. The stamp is VF. A yellow and black airmail label (not sure if this is also FD use of the label) is affixed; it was torn before application, but looks nice. This is a RARE first day cover. The 2018 Facit value is SEK 6000, however, classic Norwegian FDC auction realizations regularly outstrip the catalog values. 132-5 [20 March 1928 Henrik Ibsen] Wonderful registered FIRST DAY COVER bearing TWO COMPLETE SETS IN VERTICAL PAIRS with OSLO 20 III 28 cancellations. All stamps VF. The cancellations are clearly struck; a receiving cancellation applied to the reverse the following day. Vertical fold well away from the stamps. Remarkably, the FDC contained the registered mail receipt showing the matching registry number and with an "OSLO BKO:" thimble postmark -- finding these thimble postmarks on covers and forms/documents (their most prevalent use) is quite unusual. This is a RARE first day cover; the 2018 Facit value is SEK 3800 -- which I believe is much too low for this issue -- however, classic Norwegian FDC auction realizations regularly outstrip the catalog values. B15-18 with extra B15 [21 October 1940 Nansen (polar explorer and humanitarian)] Wonderful GERMAN CENSORED, airmail, registered FIRST DAY COVER of complete set (plus additional 10 øre for adequate postage) with OSLO official first day 20-10-40 very clear cancellations. The stamps are all VF. Nazi German censor tape and handstamps on reverse. Instructional marking of "By air mail Lisboa - New York", intended to be sent via Lisbon, Portugal, a neutral country through which much air mail of this era passed; no Lisbon postal marking (often the case). This has been through the mails including censorship, thus there is some wear, but it is unusually nice. There is a piece of Scotch-type tape at the bottom, mostly on the reverse and well away from the stamps -- this should probably be removed by a professional paper restorer. This is a somewhat scarcer first day cover; the 2018 Facit value is SEK 550, which is about right for a normal domestic use. However, a censored example such as this demands a considerable premium.

Essay for Postal Card: 1914 5 kr (!!) Eidsvold / Parliament Postal Card essay submitted to the post office for consideration by the Kristiania Philatelic Society. Due to the extremely high (for the time) face value, this seems to be a very odd essay for a postal card. Perhaps the idea was that a more reasonable postage value would be used on an issued card. Seemingly using the Wergeland painting (which was used for the issued stamps), the design is reminiscent of the issued stamp design, but larger, the small text at top vs bottom reversed, etc. 5 kr denomination (which is many multiples of any postal card rate) in dark blue, measuring 140 x 90 mm, with text "CARTE POSTALE / BREVKORT". This is the only example of such an item that I have had (I know of another one in a private collection) in 42 years. From the Norman Gary collection.

Postal Card (Double) #21 Used VF from BERGEN 11 September 1885 to København with 15 Sept receivers (address was corrected). Intact double card correctly used in-period for the correct Nordic (except Sweden) rate to Denmark. The reply card was addressed by the sender, but the recipient never used the reply portion. After postal card #1, this is one of the scarcest used Norwegian postal cards (on par with the similar 6 øre brown double card). Seldom offered, especially not in nice quality used in the proper period. From the Norman Gary collection and previously from a 1984 Danam auction. NFF 2004 "Harstad 100 år" souvenir card. : Issued in quantity of 2000 by the Norsk Filatelistforbund and virtually all distributed one to a person. The design and artwork is for the 100th anniverysary of the town of Harstad, picturing harbor scenes, created in 2004 by well-known Norwegian stamp artist Knut Løkke-Sørensen for the Hågogaland Filatelistklubb. This was originally included (now sold separetly) with the 2004 NF book "Det Lille Bibliotek, Bind 1" (The Little Library, Volume 1). The 3-volume book series (in stock with JSA) contains an extremely useful range of Norwegian philatelic articles, mini-catalogs, and mini-handbooks that list material often not cataloged anywhere else.

NFF 2005 Posthorn Design (no denomination) souvenir card. : Issued in quantity of 2000 by the Norsk Filatelistforbund and virtually all distributed one to a person. Posthorn design without denomination printed in blue from original cliche. This no-denomination design was used from 1950-1972 as the postal imprint for what we now call bulk mail: advertising mail, bulk printed matter, mass mailings of wrapper-covered mail, etc. This was originally included (now sold separetly) with the 2005 NF book "Det Lille Bibliotek, Bind 2" (The Little Library, Volume 2). The 3-volume book series (in stock with JSA) contains an extremely useful range of Norwegian philatelic articles, mini-catalogs, and mini-handbooks that list material often not cataloged anywhere else. This souvenir card is quite scarce and a very nice item related to the overall Posthorn stamp design.

Both show the typical hand-brushed irregular gum; the 4 skilling has a touch of discoloration at upper left, but these are still fresh and desirable blocks. Singles are seldom offered, especially in nice quality, but blocks are extremely scarce and NH examples are quite scarce.
