52a, Facit #51v1, INVERTED OVERPRINT [1902 5 aur Perf 12.75 with Black I GILDI overprint] Mint, extremely lightly hinged, with XF centering. This is a very interesting example of what is otherwise a overprint setting (II) that is usually without a lot of drama. Ellis Glatt commented that the overprint plate (of 50) position does not align as expected with the quarter-sheet (25) positions and full sheet (100) positions. Glatt stated that this mismatch "points to an overprint of an inverted partial sheet with at least sheet row 10 missing or folded over." This type of mismatch would occur when a partial sheet -- missing the bottom selvage and the bottom row of stamps -- was overprinted. Overprinting partial sheets was done as necessary, both when partial sheets were sent back in from post offices and when they were submitted by the public. The purpose of the "I GILDI" overprinting was to extend the period of validity of the stamps, thus the public was motivated to submit their stamps for overprinting. (For this type of overprinting, the sheets are hand-placed on the press. If the inward-selvage or any of the inward-rows of a sheet are missing, then the overprinting is shifted by one or more rows and thus does not align as expected with the plate/cliche differences discernable on the underlying sheet of stamps. "Inward" refers to which end of the sheet is placed farther into the press; whatever the normal position, it is the opposite for inverted overprint stamps.) While such a variation makes this example extremely scarce (potentially even the only example of this specific position recorded???), it tends not to increase the market value very much -- but it does make it a lot "sexier". AIEP member and preeminent I Gildi expert Ellis Glatt viewed a high resolution image of the stamp in October 2024 and commented that the overprint is genuine in his opinion. This stamp is accompanied by a Jay Smith color image certificate with a "lifetime guarantee" from Jay Smith (details of the guarantee are available upon request). The Scott 2025 value is $400 and the Facit 2024 value is SEK 4000, however neither takes into account either the extraordinary quality of this example nor the remarkably unusual overprint position situation. I have priced this example exclusively for the wonderful quality, without taking into account the overprint variation. [From the Frederick H. Campbell collection.]

65a, Facit #40dv1, INVERTED OVERPRINT [1902 16 aur Perf 14 x 13.5 with Black I GILDI overprint] Mint, extremely lightly hinged, with Average centering. The perforations barely cut the design on one side. This is a very interesting example. Ellis Glatt commented that the overprint plate (of 50) position does not align as expected with the quarter-sheet (25) positions and full sheet (100) positions. Glatt stated that this is "from overprint plate position 29 in Setting V. The underlying sheet position is 42" and that it "came from an overprinted partial sheet". Overprint position 29 would normally be expected to appear on underlying sheet positions 22 and 72 -- but here it appears overprinted on underlying sheet position 42. This type of mismatch would occur when a partial sheet -- missing the bottom selvage and the bottom row of stamps -- was overprinted. The Scott 2025 value is $1900 and the Facit 2024 value is SEK 21,000 (approximately $2100 [10/2024]), however neither takes into account the remarkably unusual overprint position situation. The underlying stamp with a normal, upright overprint is very scarce on its own; and they are usually very poorly centered (as this inverted example). I have priced this example (very low) exclusively based on the centering, without taking into account the overprint variation. [From the Frederick H. Campbell collection.]

60, Facit #45c [1902 5 aur Perf 14 x 13.5 with Red I GILDI overprint] Mint, lightly hinged, with F-VF+ centering. The overprint is from Setting V and is position 11 on the overprint plate (of 50) which correctly corresponds with the underlying sheet position possibilities of 11 or 61 (based on the cliche features of the underlying stamp). This overprint exists on all three printings / colors of the underlying stamp -- this is Facit #45c, the Light Green. The stamp is in outstanding quality for this issue, with wonderfully fresh color and with perfect perforations. One perforation tooth toward the left, at top and bottom, is very thin -- this is a natural feature of the perforation tool in that column of stamps of the sheet. The Scott 2025 value is $2100 and the Facit 2024 value is SEK 19,000. An outstanding example of an extremely scarce stamp! [From the Frederick H. Campbell collection.]

In addition to being inverted, the overprint is significantly shifted to the side. Priced very low due to the toned spot, but this is still a hard-to-find error. This printing typically has blurred details -- this example is an unusually clear printing -- however, this example does nicely show the texture or roughness in the ink surface that has come from the "tympan" packing material on the printing press under the sheet of stamp paper. While this is not a "scarce" stamp, such nice looking examples can be hard to find. [From the Frederick H. Campbell collection.]

The cancellation date is useful because of the three printings (1896 Yellow Green, 1897 Green, and 1899 Dark Green - Olive Green), it excludes the most common 1899 printing (and this is not the Yellow Green color). Though not a "scarce" stamp, examples this nice are remarkably hard to find. [From the Frederick H. Campbell collection.]

A couple blunted perforations, but such light cancellations and great appearance are quite unusual for this scarce stamp. 13, Facit #14b (Print 2: DARK VIOLET, clear print) [1876 (1881 printing) 20 aur dark violet Numeral, Perforation 14 x 13.5] "Used" with VF centering, excellent perforations, and great color. The cancellation is a very light corner cancellation that, while it cannot be specifically proven to be faked or incorrect, it cannot be confirmed as genuine and canceled in the proper period of use. Since this stamp is valued tremendously higher when properly used, this is an important factor. I must offer this as either canceled after validity or with an incorrect cancellation and thus I must value it more in line with the much lower Mint value. The Facit 2024 value is SEK 300 for Mint Hinged and SEK 8000 for Properly Used. A very attractive example regardless of the cancellation status.

45 [1902 5 aur Perf 12.75 with Red I GILDI overprint] Mint Hinged with F-VF+ centering. Unlisted (by AFA) plate variety -- but listed by Regeling as Cliche Variety C5 -- "Dented-in upper right corner". This variety exists in all normal printings of the 5 aur stamp. The underlying stamps were printed in four quarters with a 25-subject plate, thus this variety occurs four times in the sheet. Each time the plate was disassembled for cleaning and reassembled, this variety ended up in a different position. There were three printings (Regeling 6, 7, and 8) of this perforation; this variety can thus exist from PLATE (not sheet) positions 21, 35, and 11 respectively (thus SHEET positions: Regeling Print 6: 21, 26, 71, 76. Print 7: 35, 40, 85, 90. Print 8: 11, 61, 66.). It is surprising that the AFA Specialized Catalog does not list this very obvious variety -- they list many similar varieties on other Numeral stamps. When AFA does list such a variety, Mint Hinged is assigned a value of DKK 200-250 (6/2024 US$ $30-$37) for the underlying stamp (AFA does not list the plate varieties at all for the overprinted stamps). Very attractive and someday may (should) become a listed variety.

46 [1902 6 aur Perf 12.75 with Red I GILDI overprint] NEVER HINGED with F-VF+ centering, top margin example. The underlying stamps were printed in four quarters with a 25-subject plate. This AFA-LISTED PLATE VARIETY is 27Bx "White spot in front of POST, dent in right frame line near AUR, scratches in lower left corner". Regeling Cliche number is C8 (the plate position with the greatest damage). Regeling states that (for this perforation) this cliche is plate position 42 in Print 6 and plate position 1 in Print 7. Thus this top margin example must be from Print 7 (either sheet position 1 or 6). The marginal watermark text indicates that this stamp has to be from sheet position 6. [This example is an excellent illustration of one method to work out the plate position vs sheet position.] On the unoverprinted stamps, AFA values the varieties at 2 to 2.5 times the normal value (this compares to 4 to 13 times on the 5 aur stamps, due to the higher value to start with -- a 4 to 8 times multiple is more appropriate on the lower-value 6 aur overprinted stamps). Wonderfully fresh and attractive.

SKILLING 1873 IMPERFORATE PLATE PROOFS Complete Set (Scott #1-5, O1-2). The complete set of seven imperforate plate proofs, both the regular postage stamps and the officials. Thick white paper, without watermark, never gummed. All are in the issued colors except for the 3 skilling which is a blackish gray (a proof in the issued light gray is not known to exist). The quality of this set is extraordinary. Usually these proofs are found in very poor quality, including small margins, creases, and especially thins. This set is perfect, with huge margins, except for: the 3 skilling has smaller margin at top and an irregular printing impression at bottom; the 4 red skilling (postage) looks superb, but has a small thin spot; the green 4 skilling (official) has a natural paper inclusion (small speck of tree fiber). The 3 skilling has faint pre-printing paper fold which is a variety, not a defect. The colors are all wonderfully fresh and strong, including the usually faded 9 skilling light lilac official. These proofs are usually found one at a time -- this is the first time in 50 years that I have been able to offer the complete set, and by far the nicest quality that I have seen in one set. Facit Classic 2014 value SEK 14,000.

44B [1904 5 kr Christian IX] Used with XF centering. Very fresh appearance with great color, clean white paper, and perfect perforations. Neat lower corner cancellation almost "face free". An additional interesting feature of this example, though it does not increase the price, is that the crown watermark is horizontally split (shifted so that the right and left halves are on each stamp); this is not unusual on lower denominations, but I have seen very few such examples of the 5 kronur stamp. The centering and cancellation are exceptional for this stamp (it is usually very poorly centered). One of the nicest looking Used examples I have had in several years. 36 [1902 5 aur Christian IX] Used with XF centering and attractive, about 50% complete, violet BREIÐDA(ALSVIK) Type 2 (only type for this town) Crown and Posthorn cancellation. Facit C/P cancel #118 (2024 value SEK 400). Though this particular C/P cancel does not have a very high catalog value, this strike is remarkably nice and readable; it is especially nice to show the first letters of the town -- also, it is upright and on a well-centered stamp. An excellent example for this type of postmark! The stamp was issued 9 October 1902 and the use almost all (including this one) C/P cancellations ceased by summer of 1903, thus this cancellation on this stamp was only possible for about 8 months!

AFA-listed #7x Print 4 (DKK 800 [$120 10/2023] in the 2016 Specialized, most recent edition) plate variety: "White spot in front of P; white spot over O; diagonal cuts in lower left corner and frameline; dent in right frame line near bottom opposite AU". An interesting feature of stamps from this printing is that when viewed under 10x magnification at an oblique angle to a point-light source, the ink has a silvery metallic sheen. A very attractive example with a nice cancellation.

10, Facit #11d, AFA 7.4 [1876 6 aur gray, blurred print Numeral, Perforation 14 x 13.5, Fourth Printing] Used with Fine+ centering and full, perfectly-centered, but inverted, fully dated 9 December 1894 REYKJAVIK bridge-type cancellation. An interesting feature of stamps from this printing is that when viewed under 10x magnification at an oblique angle to a point-light source, the ink has a silvery metallic sheen. Examples of the Numeral stamps are surprisingly difficult to find with fully (including year) dated cancellations because the more usual single-ring cancellations did not include a year date. In this case, the presence of the 1894 date is a nice because it means that this stamp cannot be from Print 5 which was in July 1895. A very attractive example with a nice cancellation.

11, Facit #12a-II (Print 2) Early Printing, Light Reddish Carmine, Thin Paper. AFA #8.2 [1876 (1878 Printing) 10 aur, Perf 14 x 13.5] Used with Fine centering and neat, light single ring cancellation. Facit #12a represents printings 1-4 (but the AFA lists them individually); the individual printings are of course scarcer than the combined quantity of all four printings. Examples of the early printings in attractive quality are surprisingly hard to find. The AFA Specialized 2016 (the most recent edition) value is DKK 300 [about US$45 10/2023] while the Facit 2024 value for all four printings combined is SEK 400 [about US$40 10/2023]. An excellent example of this early color.

11 PERFORATION ERROR, Facit #12d variety, AFA #8.7y variety, Clear Carmine Red, Thick Paper [1876 10 aur Numeral, Perf 14 x 13.5 (1895 printing)] This perforation "error" variety -- blind perforation in the 6th horizontal hole -- is one of four possible varieties resulting from missing horizontal row pins in the perforating machine -- they are constant varieties on the 7th (1895) printing of this stamp (and the 1895 printings of the 3 and 6 aur stamps). Each of the different perforation errors affects that vertical column in the sheet. Additionally this example has one of the several versions of the AFA #8y plate variety: "Chunk missing from upper right frame line". Similar, but different versions of this variety exist in the sheet. Used with Superb centering and well centered and fully dated 22 June 1896 REYKJAVIK bridge cancellation. 12 (Reddish) Brown, Facit #13c [1876 16 aur brown Numeral, perforation 14 x 13.5, 1886 printing] Used with XF centering and neat smaller-town (one of five possible towns) corner cancellation. Wonderful color and centering, with remarkably light cancellation, and perfect perforations. [The 1891 grayish brown "unclean color" printing can be hard to distinguish from this 1886 yellowish brown printing (color names per the catalogs). When directly compared, the 1891 color does look a bit grayish (and sometimes muddy), but in my opinion it looks more yellowish than this 1886 printing. If I had selected the color names, I would have called the 1891 yellowish brown and this 1886 either brown or reddish brown.] Nice looking examples are hard to find. Facit assigns the same values for Used examples of 1886 and 1891 printings, but the 1886 printing had fewer printed and is much harder to find in nice quality.

Greidslumerki Facit #G2 [1932 75 aur Gulfoss waterfall postage stamp, Scott #175, with Greidslumerki (Greiðslumerki) 10 aur invoice / payment tax overprint] Used with VF centering, with neat manuscript cancellation, and small corner of a postal cancellation, on a small piece of postal money order or cash-on-delivery card AND with part of a Danish-printing (engraved) Greidslumerki stamp on the reverse. The tax payment was required on "both ends" of the transaction, whenever a payment of money occurred, thus two stamps were required. Not only are uses of this overprinted stamp quite scarce on a postal item, but it is extremely scarce showing both stamps (even if one is partial) and even more special in that it shows that both stamps were in use simultaneously, though at different post offices. The stamp on the back was cut in half when the front stamp was clipped out of the card by the post office for kiloware (after the required period that these cards had to be retained). To the best of my recollection, I have had only one other such example in 49 years (and never any complete cards). Seldom offered stamp that is unknown to many collectors. [Only two postage stamps were overprinted for this purpose, #174 and #175.] An outstanding example.

These varieties only appear once per sheet, but I do not know if they appear in either of the other two printings or in the same positions. 6 [1873 4 skilling, Perforation 12.5] Used with XF centering and huge, even margins all around, but with small, hidden faults (faint crease at lower left corner; crease and small tear at upper right corner). This is a terrific-looking stamp and it really does require a 10x magnifier to see the problems. The very thin paper used for these stamps results in most examples having such problems. This example has the usual rough perforations that are so typical of the Perf 12.5 stamps -- that is normal and expected, not a defect. The cancellation is very light, but it is an almost perfect, upright REYKJAVIK cancellation of the proper type for this stamp, used in the correct time period. Strong color and nice white paper -- an outstanding looking example! This 4 skilling Perforation 12.5 stamp is among the rarest regularly issued stamps from Iceland. It is usually one of the last regularly issued Icelandic stamps obtained by most collectors. This example is much, much nicer than is usually seen! Facit 2024 value with a normal cancellation is SEK 19,000 and Scott 2024 value is $2250. A very attractive example of a greatly under-appreciated stamp that is missing from virtually all collections.

139, AFA #106x [1921 "10 aur." surcharge on 5 aur green King Christian X] Mint, very lightly hinged, with VF centering. AFA Specialized 2016 (most recent edition) lists this plate variety on the underlying stamp as #86x, but they forgot to list the plate variety with the overprint (I have notified the editors). The variety is from plate position 9, and also exists on some other stamps in the issue, consists of broken green background lines on either side of the portrait, roughly in line with the mouth, resulting in white areas. This variety is rarely offered and is quite difficult to find with nice centering.

Wonderfully fresh example with great color, perfect line perforations, and pristine gum. Furthermore the perforator tool was worn out with bent hole-punches, thus the thickness of the teeth / spacing between the holes can vary. This line-perforated stamp is hard to find with nice centering. Examples this nice are rarely offered -- and blocks are rarely seen -- but then any examples of this perforation are very scarce! A key stamp in the Fish set; very hard to find NH and well centered.

20, Facit #19, AFA #17 INVERTED FRAME [1892 100 aur brown and lilac Numeral, Perforation 14 x 13.5] Mint, moderately hinged, with F-VF centering. [The Bicolored Numeral stamps of Iceland do have frame differences (the quantity of vertical background lines broken by the upper right or lower left corner triangles that identify the frames as upright or inverted. By chance the quantities are even; the plate consisted of 51 upright vs 49 inverted frame stamps, thus there is no price premium. For details, see this article with illustrations on my website. However, this difference is unknown to most collectors; if the difference was more obvious and better known, the extant quantity of stamps would be divided in half, with each half being assigned different catalog numbers -- half as many stamps (of each number) would result in higher catalog values / prices for each of the two types.] This example is very fresh and bright, with nice centering, and perfect perforations. Priced just as a basic stamp with this centering.

23 NORMAL FRAME [1900 4 aur Numeral, Perf 12.75] NEVER HINGED with VF centering. Wonderfully fresh and attractive, with bright colors, perfect perforations, post office fresh gum, and nice centering. Though listed in the AFA Specialized Catalog (2016 [in stock] or 1995 original edition or 1997 English translation), but not by Facit, the fact that there are inverted and normal frames of the Icelandic bi-colored Numeral stamps (4, 25, 50, and 100 aur) is not known by most collectors. Each sheet contained 51 normal frames and 49 inverted frames. For details, see this article with illustrations on my website. PLATE VARIETY AFA 7By (color spot and line before N of ISLAND, dent in right frameline). Wonderfully fresh -- this must be from a recently broken block. Well-centered, NH examples of this stamp (Scott #25 in general) are surprisingly hard to find. O4, Facit #TJ4a [1882 3 aur Official, perforation 14 x 13.5, First Printing: Dull Orange-Yellow under daylight and Dark Brown under long-wave UV light, Thin Paper] Used with Superb centering and neat, light, correct corner cancellation. Perfect perforations and nice color. PLATE VARIETY: The top frameline has a large break about one-third from the left side. This variety is not shown in the handbook by Regeling, thus the plate could have been damaged and quickly repaired or the break could have appeared very late in the first printing (and repaired before the second printing), thus not known to Regeling. Facit 2022 value for normal quality examples of the first printing is SEK 1500! That does not take into account the variety; though this variety is not listed by AFA, it is more prominent than most that are listed and those have a value premium of about 65%! Very attractive and wonderfully fresh.

Facit #H3E Panes respectively 5 aur mounted by bottom margin, 10 aur upright, 20 aur upright. : 1939 complete booklet with Light Gray cover; Cover type E (with inside back cover with words "Silli and Valdi"). 5 aur Brown Fish (Scott #219c [1939]) pane of four (large part of corner missing from one stamp; very likely from original production of the booklet); 10 aur Dynjandi Falls (Scott #193) pane of six, and 20 aur Geyser (Scott #204) pane of six. H3E likely exists with any of the three panes upright or inverted. I have only had this one example of a H3E booklet in 49 years. From the Garson collection. [The most complete and specialized listing of Icelandic booklets was in the Facit 2006 catalog.] The Facit value of this H3E booklet was SEK 24,000 in 2006. The current 2022 Facit (with less specialized listings) still shows a value of SEK 24,000 (approximately $2400 in February 2023)! That being said, it does not seem that the Facit editors have actually reviewed this pricing in many years. While the missing corner of one 5 aur stamp is a defect, other than that problem, the booklet and the stamps are wonderfully fresh. The stamps in the booklet are scarce in NH condition; the individual selling prices of the stamps totals right at $1000! This intact booklet early booklet is extremely scarce and is rarely offered in any condition.

Facit #H5G Panes respectively, Fish 5 aur mounted by top margin, 10 aur green bottom margin, 25 aur red top margin. : 1940 complete booklet with Light Blue cover; Cover type G (front cover with words "um alt land" and NOT "um allt land"). 5 aur Brown Fish (Scott #219c [1939-40]) pane of five; 10 aur Green Fish (Scott #221b) pane of five, and 25 aur RED Fish (Scott #224b) pane of five. H5G exists with any of the three panes mounted by top or bottom margins. I have only had this one or two examples of a H5G booklet in 49 years, but likely that the other I may have had would have had different top/bottom margin mounting combinations. From the Garson collection. [The most complete and specialized listing of Icelandic booklets was in the Facit 2006 catalog.] The Facit value of this booklet was 24,000 in 2006. In 2006, the six listed versions of the H5 booklet ranged in Facit value from SEK 12,000 to 18,000, with only this H5G being at the SEK 18,000 level. The current 2022 Facit catalog (with less specialized listings) does not break out the pricing of the six possible H5 versions; instead it shows only a single value of SEK 18,000 now -- which would be for the most common version which was valued at SEK 12,000 back in 2006. From that we can extrapolate that a properly updated Facit value for H5G would probably be in the range of SEK 22,000 to 24,000 now (approximately $2200 to $2400 February 2023). The Facit editors do not seem to have actually reviewed this pricing in many years. The booklet is in VF condition and the stamps in the booklet have centering that ranges from F-VF to VF -- all the stamps are wonderfully fresh. The stamps in the booklet are scarce in NH condition; the individual selling prices of the stamps totals $1865 for F-VF centering (even though some of them are better than F-VF)! The value of the contents fully supports the current H5 "generic" Facit value, to say nothing of the extrapolated current H5G Facit value. This intact booklet early booklet is extremely scarce and is rarely offered in any condition.

UNLISTED booklet similar to Facit #H4 EXCEPT CONTAINING 5 aur OVERPRINT ON 35 aur Jochumsson. : 1939-1940 complete booklet with Light Blue cover; Cover type G (front cover with words "um alt land" and NOT "um allt land"). 5 aur OVERPRINT on 35 aur Blue Jochumsson (Scott #212) pane of five -- NO ICELANDIC BOOKLET IS LISTED AS INCLUDING THIS STAMP!; 10 aur Ultramarine (NOT Gray Blue) and Carmine Flag (Scott #228) pane of five, and 25 aur RED Fish LINE PERFORATION VARIETY (Scott #224 variety, Facit #248C4) pane of five with plate number "2" in margin (one stamp with small natural paper inclusion). The 5 aur and 10 aur panes are upright (mounted by left margins) and the 25 aur pane is inverted (mounted by bottom margin). Prior to this, I had only previously seen one Icelandic booklet from this era with a plate number showing in the margin as it is on this 25 aur pane. This is the only example of any booklet containing the 5-on-35 aur Jochumsson stamp that is known to me. One of the definitions of what makes a booklet a "different major catalog number" is the stamp or combination of stamps in the booklet. By that definition, this booklet should have its own major catalog number in Facit. I have reported this booklet to the Facit editors. This booklet is from the Garson collection. [The most complete and specialized listing of Icelandic booklets was in the Facit 2006 catalog. This booklet was not listed in that edition, nor in any later edition.] Assuming that this booklet is not unique (but it is certainly very rare) -- though it is possible that it is unique -- I estimate a catalog value should be in the range of SEK 35,000 ($3500) based on the high values of the other 1939-1946 booklets which are known to exist in at least modest quantities. However, if this booklet is unique, the value could easily be much higher. The booklet is in PRISTINE condition and the stamps in the booklet have centering that ranges from VF to XF -- all the stamps are wonderfully fresh. The 25 aur RED stamps variety with the scarce line perforation in the booklet are quite scarce in NH condition, selling for $269 each; the total of all the individual selling prices is over $1345. An important Icelandic booklet rarity!

Facit #H7H/I VARIETY. Panes: Fish 5 aur mounted by top margin, 10 aur gray bottom margin, 25 aur brown-red bottom. : 1945 complete booklet with Dark Greenish Blue BACK COVER and Light Blue FRONT COVER. This booklet has COVER TYPE COMBINATION: Front Cover Type H and Back Cover Type one of I through L (as noted below, there are Facit listings problems in I-K vs L). The front cover has "SOFFIUBUD" 29 mm wide; words "um allt land" and NOT "um alt land". The inside front cover (side 2) has the star between two loops and NOT just a star. Those are all characteristics of Cover Type H. However, the back cover has: above "Simar: 4690-5690" and below "Simar:5690-4690". To add to the fun, the front cover is dark greenish blue (which Facit says is the color for Cover Type "I") and the back cover is light blue (or blue) which Facit says blue is the color for Cover Type "H". [At the same time, to confuse things further, there appears to be either a textual typo or an image error in Facit 2006 for the back cover of Cover Types I-K vs Type L (in regard to the "Simar" features).] I have previously encountered cover variations (combinations of front and back covers), in addition to the interleaf combination variations footnoted by Facit. I do not know if this booklet is a scarcer, unlisted variation, or if this is just showing up an error in Facit. Regardless, the Facit listings need further work. 5 aur Brown Fish (Scott #219 [1941-46]) pane of five; 10 aur GRAY Fish (Scott #222) pane of five, and 25 aur BROWN-RED Fish (Scott #225) pane of five with PLATE NUMBER "2" in margin. Prior to this, I had only previously seen one Icelandic booklet from this era with a plate number showing in the margin as it is on this 25 aur pane. This booklet likely exists with any of the three panes mounted by top or bottom margins. From the Garson collection. [The most complete and specialized listing of Icelandic booklets was in the Facit 2006 catalog.] Facit only lists this combination of stamps as being in Cover Types H and I (and M and N, but this is neither of those). The 2006 Facit values of H7H and H7I are SEK 7500 and 7000 respectively (Approximately $750 and $700 in February 2023) -- and in 2022 Facit generically valued the most common H7 variation at SEK 7500. This example, not quite fitting either of those definitions may be a scarcer, more valuable unlisted variety. The Facit editors do not seem to have actually reviewed this pricing in many years. The booklet is in PRISTINE condition and the stamps in the booklet have centering that ranges from F-VF to VF -- all the stamps are wonderfully fresh. The intact booklet early booklet is scarce as listed by Facit, but this unusual combination of cover types and colors is likely to be much scarcer as the people hand-making the booklet were likely in a short-duration transition between old and new supplies of front and back covers.

1 [1873 2 skilling] Mint, without gum (as usual), with Average centering (fairly typical) and nice overall appearance. The perforations are just into the lower part of the left frame line, but otherwise very close to being Fine. The horizontal perforations, especially at bottom, are rougher than the side perforations as normal and expected for this issue. Other than a slightly rounded lower left corner perforation, this stamp is without defects and is a nice example of the first Icelandic stamp, with great color and fresh appearance. Facit 2022 value (with gum) is SEK 9500.

2 [1873 4 skilling, Perforation 14 x 13.5] Mint, without gum (as usual), with Fine centering, but color either faded or just very light. This stamp does have thin paper as expected, but the thin paper "is on the thickest side of thin" that I have observed on the skilling stamps. As a result, the perforations are much better (cleaner and more complete) than usual. A nice looking stamp at a very low price.

7 [1873 16 skilling, Perforation 12.5] Used with VF centering and neat, clear, upright, serif-style genuine and proper (REYK)JAVIK cancellation. [This specific cancellation type is genuine and proper on this stamp; this is NOT a type of cancel that was used after the stamps were no longer value for postage.] A beautiful example of a stamp that is quite scarce in properly used condition, but it has two tiny margin tears and one tiny margin thin speck. The intense color is terrific and the perforations are much better and cleaner than usually found on this stamp. Without the quality problems, this example would fetch $675! Most collections of Used Icelandic stamps are either missing this stamp or contain an example canceled after the period of validity. An attractive example offered at a very attractive price! Facit 2022 value SEK 5,500 and Scott 2022 value $650.

3 INVERTED WATERMARK [1873 8 skilling] Mint with original gum, very modestly hinged, with F-VF centering and three huge margins. Also with AFA-listed plate variety AFA #3y "cut off lower right corner" from position 43 in the plate of 25 cliches which was struck four times to print a full sheet; thus this variety is from sheet positions 43, 48, 93, and 98. Only 1600 stamps with this plate variety originally existed, but only a few sheets (quantity unknown, but scarce) had an inverted watermark, thus possibly only a few dozen of this variety originally existed with inverted watermark -- and far fewer still remain in existence today. Perfect perforations (quite remarkable for the 8 sk stamp!) with fresh color and great overall appearance. An attractive example of a scarce watermark variety. Even without taking into consideration the scarcity of the inverted watermark and/or the plate variety, this is a remarkably nice example of the 8 skilling stamp. The Facit 2022 value is SEK 4,000 for Mint Hinged with inverted watermark, plus the value of the plate variety (the AFA premium is about 25% for the plate variety alone).

The top and bottom perforations are slightly rougher than the sides which is normal and expected for this issue, but overall the perforations are much nicer than usual. This is a very nice and sound example of a stamp that can be quite hard to obtain in such nice quality.

3 [1873 8 skilling] Mint with original gum, lightly hinged, with Average centering. This centering is fairly typical for the 8 sk stamp in particular. Excellent color and great overall freshness. Because of the very thin paper, many examples have defects. 42 [1902 40 aur Christian IX] Used with Superb centering and substantially complete FÁSKRUÐSFJÖRÐUR (Type B1b) 29 August 1918 bridge-style cancellation. While this is not a "scarce" cancellation, it is seldom seen so complete on individual small-size stamps. Also because this cancel device started in use in 1906, it is quite unusual on the Christian IX stamps. The cancel strike is sideways, but this is the only way that the full town name and full date could possibly fit on the stamp! 44B [1904 5 kr Christian IX] Used with Fine centering and small part of corner cancellation leaving the portrait "face free". Great color, perfect perforations, and excellent overall appearance. 44B [1904 5 kr Christian IX] Used with VF centering, however with worn appearance and color somewhat faded. While I think that this stamp may have been genuinely used on a high-value (registered, insured, or parcel) letter leaving the country, the cancellation either confuses the issue or makes the stamp much more rare. The cancellation is a type (with "9-4 E" hours indicator) that was not used in Iceland in this era. It appears to be a Danish postmark with a "K." at the bottom (for the "København K" post office). That is typical type of Danish cancellation found on Icelandic "fishing boat mail" - mail that was either mailed at sea, or was accepted at the dock in Iceland right before leaving port, and was handed over to the Danish post office upon arrival at a port in Denmark. What makes this example especially interesting in that regard is that a Danish cancellation on this high denomination stamp is "quite rare". However, without more research, I cannot vouch for the cancellation. If it were not worn and faded, and if it had a certificate, it would be valued at multiple times the normal Used value.

38 [1902 10 aur Christian IX] Used F-VF with complete, but sideways, AKUREYRI provincial single-ring cancellation. This 10 aur stamp is often collected with as many different town cancellations as possible -- quite a challenge!
130 [1922 "5 aur." surcharge on 16 aur Christian IX] Used F-VF centered, with substantially complete (for the size of the postmark) REYÐAR(FJÖRÐUR) bridge cancellation, type B2c1 (Facit 2022 #40). Though year date not showing, very nice strike for this type of item -- and VERY UNUSUAL on one of the provisional surcharges. An ordinary example of this stamp with this centering would be $24, but "99%" of those are the usual Reykjavik or other larger-town cancellations. While the catalog value of the postmark is not high, it is surprisingly seldom seen.

This "C4" line perforation was made by separate perforator tool strokes to make the horizontal vs vertical perforations, thus the four corner teeth are random in shape and appearance -- in this 10-block, one can see that all the perforation intersections are slightly different. Furthermore the perforator tool was worn out with bent hole-punches, thus the thickness of the teeth / spacing between the holes can vary. Blocks of the line-perforated stamps can be hard to find; use blocks even harder, and a 10-block such as this is very seldom seen. 10 First Printing, Facit #11a, AFA 7.1 [1876 6 aur violetish gray Numeral, Perforation 14 x 13.5] Mint with VF centering, partial disturbed original gum remains. This first printing is extremely scarce with any gum at all, to say nothing of full gum -- it is also very scarce with nice centering. This is an exceptional appearing example with great color, really nice perforations, and remarkably nice centering. [Facit 2022 value SEK 3000 (about $330 2/2022).]

10, Facit #11d, AFA 7.4 [1876 6 aur gray, blurred print Numeral, Perforation 14 x 13.5, Fourth Printing] NEVER HINGED with F-VF centering. Wonderfully fresh -- this must be from a recently broken block. An interesting feature of stamps from this printing is that when viewed under 10x magnification at an oblique angle to a point-light source, the ink has a silvery metallic sheen. NH examples of this stamp (Scott #10) are very scarce and seldom offered. (The 4th and 5th printings have the same NH value, no premium for the printing.) Terrific color, perfect perforations, and perfect original gum. [Facit 2022 value SEK 4000 (about $440 2/2022).]
11 PERFORATION ERROR, Facit #12d variety, AFA #8.7y variety, Clear Carmine Red, Thick Paper [1876 10 aur Numeral, Perforation 14 x 13.5 (1895 printing)] This perforation "error" variety -- blind perforation in 5th horizontal hole -- is one of four possible varieties resulting from missing horizontal row pins in the perforating machine -- they are constant varieties on the 7th (1895) printing of this stamp (and the 1895 printings of the 3 and 6 aur stamps). Each of the different perforation errors affects that vertical column in the sheet. Additionally this example has one of the several versions of the AFA #8y plate variety: "Chunk missing from upper right frame line". Similar, but different versions of this variety exist in the sheet; at least two different exist with this particular perforation error. Mint with F-VF centering with only modest hinging, but small thin spot in hinge area. Very attractive appearance with brilliant color. Mint examples of the perforation errors can be quite hard to find. A normal example of this mint stamp, without the thin spot and with this centering would be $204 -- the perforation errors are much scarcer.

17a Ultramarine [1882 20 aur ultramarine Numeral, Perforation 14 x 13.5] Mint, with only partial (disturbed) gum remaining. F-VF centering . Wonderful, intense, ultramarine color and perfect perforations. This ultramarine printing is quite scarce with any gum at all. The Facit 2022 value for with gum is SEK 7000! To further emphasize the point, Facit does not even attempt to price never hinged. A wonderful looking example. If an example with this centering had full gum (hinged), it would fetch $590.

66 INVERTED WATERMARK [1902 40 aur Perf 14 x 13.5 with Black I GILDI overprint] NEVER HINGED with Fine centering. Wonderfully fresh and bright. This is one of the scarcest inverted watermarks of the non-rarity I GILDI overprints -- I have not recorded having an example in the last 25 years and I do not recall having an example in the 24 years before that. Neither Facit nor the AFA Specialized list a price for this inverted watermark stamp in NH condition -- Facit does list NH values for other inverted watermark stamps in I GILDI overprints (AFA does not provide any NH prices for any inverted watermark stamps). Facit 2022 value for HINGED is SEK 1600 [1/2022 $190] and AFA Specialized 2016 (most recent edition) value for Hinged is DKK 1200 [1/2022 $205]. In Facit, other I GILDI stamps with inverted watermarks have a 40% to 150% premium value! This stamp is very scarce with inverted watermark and "rare" thus in NH condition.

O38, Facit #TJ40, AFA #TJ31 [1907 Official 50 aur Two Kings] NH Fine top margin 4-block. The color spot in the margin is the alignment dot for the portrait plate, identifying this as sheet positions 5-6/15-16 (the sheet position can also be located by the marginal watermark text position). 2, AFA 2y SMALL CLICHE [1873 4 skilling, Perf 14 x 13.5] Mint, with full original gum (unusual), extremely lightly hinged, with XF centering and brilliant color. This is a wonderful example of a little-known, but major variety. The height of the design is only about 19 mm instead of 20 mm -- this is been listed by AFA with little fanfare, but it is not listed by Scott and is otherwise seldom mentioned in the literature... despite this small cliche appearing in 8 positions in the sheet! Regardless of the variety, this is an exceptional well-centered and large-margined example, that looks NH without a magnifying glass. The perforations are absolutely perfect -- extremely unusual for an example of the Skilling stamps. The combination of the quality and the variety make this a truly exceptional "GEM" example that defies any catalog valuation. AFA Specialized 1996 (most recent edition) value for the mint variety in ordinary quality is DKK 2000 = $330 [12/2021], compared to DKK 1200 for the normal type. However an example such as this -- the finest I have seen of this variety in 48 years -- commands a significant premium. Only 8000 of this variety originally existed -- surely only a small fraction of those remain today -- and likely not more than a few dozen of the original quantity of the variety could have looked this nice -- perhaps this is the finest remaining example? A superlative stamp for a superlative collection.

2 [1873 4 skilling, Perf 14 x 13.5] Used with a perfectly centered REYKJAVIK cancellation, but that was applied after the end of the skilling currency period, i.e. "after-canceled". The cancellation is a genuine postmark type, just applied after the period of validity of the skilling stamps. Other than some of the relative angles of the lettering, this cancellation Type (Facit) G1b looks almost identical to the correct-period cancellation Type D2 -- see the Facit Classic for illustrations of the difference. Fine centering, strong color, and with extremely nice perforations for a skilling issue (the horizontal perforations are almost always rough). Accompanied by an 1998 APS certificate stating "Used, genuine in all respects" -- not mentioning the cancellation (I was not an APS examiner of this stamp at that time). An unusually well-centered strike of this cancellation, but appropriately offered at a very low price. (For comparison, Scott 2022 value for a correctly canceled Used stamp is $900.)

15 Golden Yellow [1882 3 aur, Small 3, Perf 14 x 13.5] Mint with VF centering and large margins, but no gum and with a small crease that could perhaps be flattened out. This is a complicated and controversial stamp color; it was the subject of an extensive article, by expert Lasse Nielsen, in one of the Danish journals around 2013-2017; I cannot find my copy of the article at this moment. For many years Facit did not list this color, but they do now as Facit #8v3. Facit describes it as being on "thick soft white paper from Printing 2 or 3, not yet determined which". I agree with that except that in my opinion, the paper is "medium (but close to thin), very crisp (not soft), and it is white." AFA lists this color as #12.3b, being from Printing 3b and describes the paper as "medium". Regardless, this is an extremely scarce stamp. Facit and AFA only price it (as they always do) with gum, but the three Mint examples I have recorded having in the last 25 years have all been without gum; I do not think I have had an example with gum in my 48-year career. Facit 2022 value is SEK 8000 = $960 [12/2021] and AFA Specialized 2016 (most recent edition) value is DKK 6000 = $1020 [12/2021]. Well centered examples of this color are "rare". Despite the small crease, which is hard to see, this is by far the best looking example of this stamp that I have had in 48 years. It is really stunning with wonderful centering, brilliant color, and perfect perforations. An exceptional stamp that will help to build an exceptional collection.
15, Facit #8e, AFA #12.5 Brownish Orange, Thick Paper [1882 3 aur Numeral, Perf 14 x 13.5 (1895 printing)] Mint hinged with F-VF centering, but hinge remnant and some paper adhesion on gum. Each of the different perforation errors affects that vertical column in the sheet. Mint with F-VF centering. There is some gum loss where a hinge was removed (and the gum went with the hinge), but it does not have a thin and does not show any defect in watermark fluid. Very attractive appearance. Mint examples of the perforation errors can be quite hard to find. A normal example of this mint stamp would be $72 -- the perforation errors are much scarcer.

12 Dark Brown Grainy Print, Thin Paper, Facit #13a [1876 16 aur brown Numeral, perforation 14 x 13.5, 1876 printing] Mint, no gum (as usual for this printing), with Average centering (which is typical for this printing). Excellent color showing the grainy print. Though undamaged examples of this printing are scarce, any Mint/Unused examples of this printing are very scarce -- to emphasize this point, the specialized catalogs do not even price NH examples! (Facit 2021 SEK 4500 with gum = approx US$540 7/21.)

12 (Deep) Brown Clear Print, Thin Paper, Facit #13b [1876 16 aur brown Numeral, perforation 14 x 13.5, 1883 printing] Used with Superb centering and almost perfectly centered and complete REYKJAVIK cancellation. Excellent color showing the smooth, clear print. Extraordinary centering for this early printing, and wonderful cancellation. Nice looking, undamaged examples of this thin-paper printing are very hard to find; the centering is usually very poor. Examples this nice are truly exceptional!

O9 [1895 50 aur Official, perforation 14 x 13.5] Used with Average-Fine centering, and with strong HRAUNGERDI provincial town corner cancellation. Great color, perfect perforations. The stamp centering is typical for the 50 aur. This smaller town cancel is quite unusual on the early Official stamps. Provenance: from the Roger A. Swanson collection, from of a page of six 50 aur stamps sold by Northland Auctions in 1995; subsequently in the Frederick H. Campbell collection, prior to my purchasing the group. Very pretty!

O9 [1895 50 aur Official, perforation 14 x 13.5] Used with Fine centering and with bold "(FRA) ISLAND" DANISH INCOMING SHIP MAIL CANCELLATION. Very attractive, but with expertly repaired and reperforated top margin. The stamp centering, clearing the perforations, is better than usual for the 50 aur. While this type of cancellation is commonly seen on regular Icelandic stamps of this era, Danish incoming ship mail cancellations are rare on Icelandic Official stamps. Early Official mail leaving the country is extremely rare; Official stamps were likely only accepted on mail going as far as Denmark. I cannot recall having, in the last 48 years, any examples of an Official stamp this early bearing such a cancellation. Provenance: from the Roger A. Swanson collection, from of a page of six 50 aur stamps sold by Northland Auctions in 1995; subsequently in the Frederick H. Campbell collection, prior to my purchasing the group. The scarcity of this cancellation on this stamp is demonstrated by a) that somebody would so expertly repair such a stamp and b) a high-level collector and prominent international exhibitor such as Swanson would include it in his collection.

90 Rough Perforation Variety [1911 15 aur Sigurdsson] Used with XF-Superb centering and neat, light corner cancellation. This example has an unusual feature. The watermark is so pronounced (the paper is so thin in that area) that the printing of the design did not fully impress into the watermark area, thus you can see the faint outline of the watermark in the lower left quadrant of the stamp where the ink coverage is not quite complete. I have only previously seen a couple stamps (from any country) with such a feature!

O2a IMPERFORATE Facit TJ2v1 [1873 8 skilling lilac Official, Imperforate] Mint, no gum, with large margins and Superb appearance. This imperforate has a watermark (which distinguishes it from being a proof); it was issued with gum, but this example is without gum. Huge margins and strong color (for this stamp), however, there is a curious horizontal line in the bottom third -- mostly only visible under 10x magnification -- that is either a paper inclusion, a removed pen mark (this stamp is not known used), or a repaired paper break. As a dealer, I have to assume the worst, but it is sure a nice looking example of a very scarce stamp! Facit 2020 value SEK 5000!

7 [1873 16 skilling, Perforation 12.5] Used with F-VF+ centering and neat, light, but absolutely completely genuine and proper cancellation. A beautiful example of a stamp that is quite scarce in properly used condition, but it has two defects: a repaired perforation tooth in the top margin and an almost invisible short crease ending in a tiny tear at the center-right margin. Without the quality problems, this example would fetch $675! Most collections of Used Icelandic stamps are either missing this stamp or contain an example canceled after the period of validity. An attractive example offered at a very attractive price! Facit 2020 value SEK 5,500 and Scott 2021 value $625.
O66 [1930 "þjónustumerki" Official overprint on 5 kroner Parliament (Woman Spinning Yarn)] Used with VF centering and neat corner cancellation (correct type of cancellation in this period), but with tiny thin speck that most people would probably not notice. Catalog listed perforation "error": blind hole 4 on top and bottom; on this denomination, only exists on the 1895 printing. 35 variety, Facit #64v, AFA #36x [1902 4 aur Christian IX] NH VF-XF with the frame variety "AUP instead of AUR" from positions 95 in the sheet. This variety is the result of damage to the cliche, not because the engraver made a P instead of an R. However, any variety that changes the text of a stamp is of intense interest to collectors. This example is wonderfully fresh and bright. Facit 2020 value is SEK 1500 and AFA 2016 Specialized value is DKK 800. Seldom offered, in fact I have only had a couple examples of this variety in 46 years (and no others this nice!) which causes me to think the cliche damage probably occurred later in the printing process. I believe that this variety is significantly undervalued in the catalogs.

37 [1902 6 aur Christian IX] Used Superb centered 4-BLOCK. Has some age discoloration on the backside, but front looks terrific. Single, neat centrally struck REYKJAVIK cancellation. Used blocks are not currently cataloged anywhere of which I am aware, but used blocks of the Christian IX issue are quite unusual, especially this nice looking.

37 [1902 6 aur Christian IX] Used with VF centering and proper, almost complete SEYDISFJORDUR single-ring provincial cancellation. Almost full cancel but sideways (this cancellation style did not contain a year date). This issue is hard to find with full single-ring town cancellations. Excellent example. Though not a very scarce stamp, examples this nice and this nicely canceled are seldom seen.

102 [1914 5 aur Two Kings, Crosses Watermark] NEVER HINGED, Fine. An identifiable variety position, with large white area in the upper right corner. A very attractive example. Scarce NH. This really should be listed in the AFA Specialized catalog, and if it were, it would have a DKK 3000 catalog value as NH, 50% more than the regular NH value. The price for a normal NH Fine stamp would be $195 (and $275 for NH F-VF). A great NH stamp at a great price.
102 [1914 5 aur Two Kings, Crosses Watermark] Mint VF, with large margins, very lightly hinged. An identifiable variety position, with break in frameline at upper right corner. A very attractive example. This really should be listed in the AFA Specialized catalog, and if it were, it would have a DKK 2000 catalog value. The price for a normal Mint VF stamp would be $129, but this looks nicer than most.

87 Plate Variety [1911 3 aur Sigurdsson] Used VF horizontal pair with very neat, light (but correct) cancellation, with AFA-listed (2016 Specialized) plate variety #64y: Color line in D of ISLAND, on right stamp; from plate position 56. 89 Plate Variety [1911 6 aur Sigurdsson] Used VF+ with very neat, light (but correct type of) cancellation well away from the variety, with unlisted (in the AFA 2016 Specialized or any other catalog) plate variety: Large break in left frame opposite nose, with piece from the break out in the margin. A very distinct and clear type of constant variety. Because this is obviously major plate damage (and not just a piece of trash on the plate), it is by definition a constant variety. However, it is so obvious that it was probably repaired very quickly and thus few copies may exist (with the result that it has not come to the attention of the catalog editors). This is more obvious than any of the listed varieties on the Sigurdsson issue! A very special item that should become listed! Listed varieties that are nowhere near as obvious are listed at DKK 450!

91 PARTIAL DOUBLE PRINT [1911 25 aur Sigurdsson] Mint Fine+, with one shorter perforation. This example shows a very clear doubling, which is what is called a "kiss print" or "slide print" -- as the paper is coming into contact or leaving contact with the plate, it accidentally touches the plate a second time. This gives one the sense of a double impression, but it is not doubled over the whole stamp. This example shows strong doubling in the left margin and the "25". This type of variety is quite rare on Icelandic stamps (or Danish stamps; the same firm printed the stamps of both countries at the time). Very interesting and attractive.
