33 Yellow-Orange [1885 20 penni orange 4-Numeral, Perf 12.5] Used with XF centering, but small corner crease. Complete circular grid of squares (7 x 7 with a void in the center), XF black "cork" cancellation that appears to be the Laitinen #357 design used at an unknown location per Laitinen 1981. Listed with rarity of R4 (6-12 examples known in 1981) on this stamp (on other stamps it is RR!). 96% complete and clear strike; about as nice an example as one could hope for. |

(21) Grayish Ultramarine, Worn Framelines (Facit #16SC1e) [1875 (21 October 1976) 20 penni 4-Numeral, Perf 11] Used with VF centering and huge margins (typical of this printing). It bears a clear carved/cork cancellation in the form of a round group of very closely spaced lines -- there are several patterns similar to this illustrated by Laitinen; this could probably be attributed to a specific town with some careful comparison. The handbook on the 1875 issues (by Heikki Reinikainen, Jussi Murtosaari, and Jeffrey Stone) identifies this as "Printing 5, SAe". There are other colors and appearance in Printing 5, but the handbook gives them separate identification; this one is distinctive. An outstanding example of a very distinctive printing, with an excellent card cancellation. |

33 [1885 20 penni 4-Numeral, Orange, Perf 12.5] (F-VF) tied on very neat 22 May 1886 cover by carved "cork" grid cancellation and JOENSUU 2-ring dated side town cancellation. Joensuu had several similar style postmarks. Customary "ANK 25/5" (receiving) postmark. All such carved postmarks are at least scarce, and often rare, on cover -- especially examples this nice! |
