75 IMPERFORATE, AFA #57 Utakket, Facit #72v [1907 25 øre Frederik VIII] Imperforate horizontal PAIR. Mint, NEVER HINGED, with VF appearance and huge margins. This pair is without gum, but it is unclear if it was ever gummed. The limited literature that I have found on this stamp is not clear about whether this imperforate stamp was ever gummed. CROSSES WATERMARK instead of Crown Watermark. Facit 2024 #72v is specified as imperforate with watermark crosses (i.e. like this example), but prices it only with a "*" (very rare). The AFA 2016 (most recent edition) lists this simply as "utakket" [imperforate], without mentioning a watermark. The AFA value is DKK 6,000 PER STAMP, thus totaling DKK 12,000 or about US$1750. [11/2024] This pair has huge margins all around except that the upper left corner of the pair is clipped resulting in a smaller (but still clear) margin in that spot. Accompanied by a 1971 Svend Grønlund photo certificate starting [translated] "Imperforate pair without gum, watermark crosses... Stamp is genuine, fault free, and without repairs or hidden flaws of any kind. The left stamp is clipped crooked at the top. An extraordinarily scarce pair -- one of only a couple that I have seen offered in the market and the only one that I have had in 51 years! A showpiece rarity for any Danish collection, but especially important for a specialized collection or exhibit of the Frederik VIII stamp issue.

224 non-fluor (Plate Variety), AFA #246x [1938 5 øre wine red Engraved Wavy-Line / Numeral] Used with VF appearance and an almost complete, well-centered, AALBORG cancellation, but creased -- looks great from the front. The well-known CLUB FOOT variety and line in bottom right of K of DANMARK variety from position 30 in part of the printing. There are actually two club foot varieties, this one also with the line in the K, and a different one, without the line in K (and slightly different club foot), from position 40 in part of the printing. A very nice example despite the creasing. Seldom offered and always in demand. Taking the great postmark into account, this must be the nicest looking example of this variety that I have had in 50 years! If not creased, this example would certainly well quickly at $40.

J6 [1921 Postage Due "PORTO" overprint on 25 øre Christian X] Used with VF-XF centering and 98% complete and well-centered FREDERIKSHAVN 10 January 1924 cancellation. (If the cancellation were perfectly upright, not as much of it would have fit on the stamp. The overprinted postage due stamps are hard to find with such nice centering and such complete cancellations. An ordinary Used example of this stamp with this centering would be $11 -- with such a nice cancellation it is much, much scarcer!
AFA Coil #1a [1919 7+3 øre VERTICAL] Used combination coil vertical pair, with VF-XF centering and neat July 1924 cancellation, with the scarce, distinctive PEARL GRAY 3 øre (Facit #88b, AFA #79a). The 3 øre PEARL GRAY ONLY comes from one printing of the combination coil stamps. The single PEARL GRAY stamp is valued by Facit 2024 at SEK 1600 (9/2024 US$160) and AFA 2023 at DKK 1300 (9/2024 US$195). This intact combination coil pair is listed by AFA 2023 at DKK 2200 (9/2024 US$330). An unusually fresh and attractive example of this scarce coil issue; such nice centering is seldom encountered. Even though there is a space for the 3 øre Pearl Gray in many European-made Denmark albums, singles of the 3 øre Pearl Gray are seldom offered. Missing from most collections, either as the Pearl Gray single or the AFA #1a pair.

229b [1937 Dybbøl Mill 10 + 5 øre 4-block with 10 øre Wavy-Line Numeral, from booklet pane; see Scott #B6-8] Used combination 4-block from booklet pane (i.e. no binding selvage) with XF 21 January 1937 (SECOND DAY OF USE) "KJØBENHAVN/ 3 / 3" cancellation. The fact that this is the second day of use (not first day and not years later) and the face that it is canceled at a typical substation, makes it much more likely that this is genuine non-philatelic use. Nice used examples of this combination block are remarkably hard to find.

98 LIGHT YELLOW [1918 7 øre "orange to yellow" Christian X] Used with F-VF centering and a RINGKJØBING (11?) March 1919 cancellation. Up to and including in the 1981-1982 AFA Specialized Catalog, this color was listed as AFA #98a and both Mint and Used examples were priced at approximately TEN TIMES the value of the normal range of orange colors. After that 1981-82, the listing was consolidated and AFA #98a was dropped. However, this color does exist; it is not just a faded ink color. There is a space for this yellow color in many European-made albums. While the catalogs give the issue date for the first 7 øre stamp (orange, not yellow) as December 1918, the plate reference by Knud Juul states that stamps from the first 7 øre printing/plate were delivered 11 January 1919. There were 8 printings in 1919 and two more in 1920. I have not seen confirmation from which printing (plate number) this color comes, but I believe it to be from Print III (Plate #121-H, first delivery 8 March 1919) or Print IV (Plate #122-C, first delivery 22 March 1919). The DAY date of this cancellation could be 11 (March 1919), which fits with the first delivery (8 March) from Plate #121-H. This is the first MARCH-dated cancellation that I have observed. [I also have had examples of this color canceled in April and May; Print V was not delivered until 7 June.] The cancellation on this example is a little light, but is clearly "3. 19." (followed by the hours indicator). A very nice example of a scarce stamp!
161 YELLOW [1921 8 on 7 øre surcharged Christian X] Used with XF centering and neat cancellation. The underlying stamp was listed in YELLOW by the AFA catalog up to and including in the 1981-1982 AFA Specialized Catalog edition. This color (of the unoverprinted stamp) was listed as AFA #98a and (unoverprinted) as AFA 118a; both Mint and Used examples of both versions were priced at approximately TEN TIMES the value of the normal range of orange colors. After that 1981-82 edition, the listings were consolidated and AFA #98a and #118a were dropped. For the unoverprinted stamp, there is a space for this yellow color in many European-made albums, but I am not sure about albums with spaces for the overprinted stamp. The plate reference book by Knud Juul states that stamps from all 10 plates of the unoverprinted stamp were overprinted, but that no records were kept of the quantities from each plate. Juul did not state which colors/shades came from which printings/plates. Based on the delivery dates of the unoverprinted stamps from the plates and my observation of the cancellation dates on unoverprinted stamps, the unoverprinted YELLOW stamps most likely came from Print III (Plate #121-H) and/or perhaps Print IV (Plate #122-C). The cancellation on this stamps shows a final "3" for the year date (surely 1923). This is one of the nicest looking YELLOW examples of the overprinted stamps that I have had in 50 years!

1946 Tarp-Esbjerg Internment Camp Stamps. Canceled VF complete set of all four types (solid vs braided outer frame; lower left corner ornaments point in different directions within a frame type). Imperforate as always, with ample to huge margins, including some margins on each stamp showing the dotted cutting lines. The cancellations are matching; they are indistinct and may not be correct (or they may be camp-applied cancels) -- I have previously seen this cancellation type on loose stamps, but I do not recall seeing this cancellation type on covers. Canceled examples (or uses on covers) are seldom found. This is the only canceled set of all four types that I can recall having in 50 years.

271 OVERPRINT ERROR [1940 20 øre Surcharge on 15 øre Red Caravel, AFA Type II (w/o hook on spar)] Vertical bottom-margin pair with XF centering, Used with "...RUP" cancellation. 4/5-th of the overprint is missing from the top stamp and the overprint is entirely missing from the bottom stamp. This is most likely a sheet fold-over error whereby the bottom left corner of the sheet was folded up toward the upper right. However, it also could be the result of piece of "foreign matter" (i.e. a loose scrap of paper) getting between the overprint plate and the sheet of stamps. Either way, this type of error is transitory and either affected only one (fold-over) or up to a few (foreign matter) sheets of stamps. In Scott Catalogue error parlance, the lower stamp would qualify (as long as it is still attached to the upper stamp) as a full-scale "missing overprint error". This distinction puts it in a very special class of Danish rarities! While this is a rarely-seen type of error on Danish overprinted stamps, it is VERY RARE on a USED item because it had to be overlooked several times between production, quality control inspection, and use -- and then the pair had to remain intact. This is very likely UNIQUE. To the best of my memory, as of 9/2024, this is the only (either Mint or Used) Danish overprint-fold-over error -- and certainly the only one that resulted in a "missing overprint error" that I have been able to offer in my 50 year career.

2b, Facit #2IVa, AFA #1IIIb [1854 4 RBS Thiele III printing, in Yellow Brown] Used with VF+ with four ample to large margins. This is an interesting color shade which is on the orangish or peachy side of yellow brown, but with a pastel cast to it -- an unusual shade! However, the most exciting aspect of this stamp is the #172 (Marne; in SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN, now in Germany) 3-ring numeral cancellation, well-struck and almost perfectly centered. This number only exists (on 4 RBS stamps) on the light-colored 4 RBS stamps (Scott #2b color range; Thiele III colors) and even then it is VERY SCARCE. The #172 cancellation device was not issued until 1 February 1855; the light-colored 4 RBS stamps were first issued in March 1854 but were already replaced in May 1854 by the 4 sk (dotted spandrel) stamp. Thus very few examples of this stamp saw late use in this town. The DAKA 1999 value was DKK 1800 (9/2024 US$270) but that was a long time ago and the DAKA publisher (since deceased) had personally told me that he put low values on scarce items such as this, that he wanted to buy. The AFA Specialized 2002 Catalog (the most recent edition that had priced listings for the Schleswig cancellations) value was DKK 2500 (9/2024 US$375). The 2024 Facit Classic Catalog value is SEK 3000 (9/2024 US$300), but this is superior quality. An outstanding example of a key 3-ring numeral cancellation on the widely-collected 4 RBS stamps.
2b, Facit #2IVd, AFA #1IIId [1854 4 RBS Thiele III printing, in Olive Brown] Used with XF centering with four large to huge margins. With Superb #62 (Sakskøbing) 3-ring numeral cancellation, wonderfully-struck and almost perfectly centered. M1 [1917 5 øre "S F" Military Overprint] NEVER HINGED with F-VF centering, but with a internal stress crease only visible from the reverse. An exceptional example with a war-time gum type that I have never before seen on a Danish stamp. The gum is slightly dark-yellowish and is "dry", very dull / non-reflective.I have seen such war-time gums on the WWI-era stamps of some other countries, but never before on a Danish stamp. The underlying 5 øre stamp had 86 plate numbers (printings), but only three of those received the military overprint. I have seen hundreds of Mint examples of this military overprint in the last 50 years, but none with this gum. If this gum is unaltered it must have been applied to only a very small portion of one of the three printings -- however, such happenings are fairly common with the supply shortages under wartime conditions. While it is possible for environmental / storage conditions to cause changes in the appearance of stamp gums, I do not recall ever seeing such a change in the stamps of any country to this appearance. A fascinating mystery stamp that just may be a rarity!
Q10 [1930 10 kr red and green Christian X with POSTFÆRGE (postal ferry) overprint] Mint, very lightly hinged, with VF centering. Brilliant colors, white paper, perfect perforations and post-office-fresh gum other than being very lightly hinged. Such nice examples are hard to find.

361-2 [1956 30 and 60 øre Norden (Nordic Swans)] NH VF set of lower left corner margin plate number blocks, both with a simple plate #0. Very minor corner marginal bends mentioned only for complete accuracy. The 30 øre shows a shadow-print of a "2" composed of horizontal lines; that is from different type of plate number at the bottom center of the sheet and which sometimes resulted in indirect "shadow prints" such as this. The 60 øre has a similar shadow-print that appears be a "3". The two "0" digits were hand-struck on the plate using a "type die"; in the case of this 60 øre there is a partial strike slightly left of the full strike. Though this is a Danish stamp issue, the printing of the stamps of all five 1956 Norden countries was done in Sweden, thus the plate markings are "Swedish style", not "Danish style". Each sheet (except for Sweden which issued coil stamps) that I have seen bears both the hand-struck single-line corner plate number (I think in both the upper left and upper right corners) and the engraved bottom-center plate number composed of horizontal lines (I think only in the bottom margin?). I have not seen enough information to be sure what plate numbers exist of either type in each country. (I welcome information on this subject.) While these plate blocks should not be "scarce", they are remarkably difficult to obtain (from all four countries which issued sheets). Especially in the case of Denmark, I suspect that many were not saved because they did not look like the traditional style of Danish plate blocks.

141 [1918 27 øre Surcharge on 10 øre Newspaper, Crown Watermark, Perf 12.75] Used with F-VF centering, but with a very light cancellation that cannot be determined to be genuine -- thus I have to assume that the cancellation is not proper. However, the stamp itself is otherwise completely genuine. If the stamp had been the lower cost Mint Hinged with this centering, the price would have been $110. This canceled-looking example has great color and large margins. Priced very low with the assumption that the cancellation is not proper, but it is still a scarce (otherwise genuine) stamp that is missing from most collections.

The town name is probably Randers; cancellations other than København are much scarcer. 268 Facit/AFA Type I, Danish Paper (Gray under UV); Facit #117a, AFA #262aBb [1940 6 øre Surcharge on 8 øre Wavy-Line Numeral Type I] NEVER HINGED with VF centering and SHIFTED OVERPRINT, down and to the right, partly covering the bottom text. The underlying stamp was printed in Type I (this example) and Type II (common, not this example). The Type I underlying stamps were printed on German Paper and Danish Paper. The German Paper has grayish paper, dark gum, and ink that is light green under UV light -- this overprint was never applied to the German Paper stamps. The Danish Paper stamps have whiter paper and light-colored gum, but were printed with both the ink that is light green under UV light (scarcer) and this example which was printed with ink that is gray under UV light. All the Type I overprinted stamps are scarce. This scarce stamp has a place in most European-made Danish albums, but it is missing from (or misidentified in) the vast majority of collections. An excellent example.

268 Facit/AFA Type I, Danish Paper (Gray under UV); Facit #117a, AFA #262aBb [1940 6 øre Surcharge on 8 øre Wavy-Line Numeral Type I] NEVER HINGED BLOCK OF FOUR with XF centering on all four stamps. This scarce stamp has (as a single) a place in most European-made Danish albums, but it is missing from (or misidentified in) the vast majority of collections. Most blocks of this scarce stamp were broken up long ago; this is the first time in 50 years that I have been able to offer a block! An outstanding block that would be a key item in a collection of the Engraved Wavy-Line Numeral stamps. NH XF singles sell for $79 each; this block is offered for just a little less than four singles!

Scott #17, Facit #21c, AFA 17.3, Printing 3 [1871 3 skilling Bicolor] Mint hinged BLOCK OF FOUR with VF/F-VF centered stamps. Excellent perforations for this issue. The block is intact, and has been sensibly reinforced to keep that way. The gum, other than being hinged, is full and fresh. Wonderfully fresh color for this printing and overall outstanding quality. Mint blocks of the Skilling Bicolors are extremely scarce; in the last 50 years many have been broken up to sell as single stamps! Facit values Mint 4-blocks of this printing at SEK 5000 or 6.25 times the value of a single -- but they are much harder to find than that! Interestingly, Facit 2024 values singles at SEK 800 (4/2024 about $80) while AFA Specialized 2016 [most recent] values singles at DKK 1400 (4/2024 about $210, or $840 for four singles). That is quite a difference. Based on my experience on this stamp, the AFA value is much closer to correct for attractive examples.Accompanied by a Lasse Nielsen handwritten printing / position note as was his custom: "pr. 3 / A59-70" indicating Printing 3 from positions in the A-sheet of 59-60/69-70. An scarce showpiece that would be an important item in a collection or exhibit. From the J.A. Farrington collection.

Scott #26 COLOR PROOF Gray and Ultramarine [1875 4 øre Bicolor, Normal Frame]. VF centering and wonderful quality, with full margins as printed. Color proof on stamp-like paper, but imperforate and without watermark or gum (all these color proofs were ungummed). Accompanied by a Lasse Nielsen (the acknowledged premier expert on the Bicolors) 1987 color photo certificate which translates to "Proof print of 4 øre ultramarine / gray with normal frame, in same color shade as was used for the first printing of the 4 øre. Without watermark. Imperforate and without gum. Genuine and without repairs. A very good example." This is not a "plate" proof because the top and bottom margins are huge, demonstrating that this was not printed as part of a normal sheet. AFA Specialized Catalog 2016 [most recent edition] #P23Aa/b [AFA does not explain their intended difference between a and b]. P23A proofs were printed in a horizontal strip of 10; the left-most stamp with Frame Type 2 with Matrix Flaw 2B, and the other nine stamps with Frame Type 3. Frame Types 2 and 3 can be hard to distinguish (depending upon the impression strength); Nielsen did not state which this is. This does not have Matrix Flaw 2B, thus is Frame Type 3. The AFA Specialized 2016 [most recent] value is DKK 3000 (4/2024 about $450). These early proofs are much scarcer than even that catalog value suggests. An outstanding example that would be an important addition to a collection of the early øre Bicolors. From the J.A. Farrington collection.

20b INVERTED FRAME, Facit #24bv, AFA 20y [1871 16 skilling Bicolor (July 1872 printing)] Used with F-VF centering and neat, very light 3-ring numeral cancellation. Strong color and excellent perforations for this printing of this stamp. Only one position (90) in the sheet of only the second printing had an inverted frame, thus only 9500 examples were originally printed. Despite that seemingly high quantity, very few have survived, making this "one of the rarest Danish stamps nobody ever sees". I estimate that fewer than 500 examples still exist -- remember that inverted frames were not discovered until around 1910, so collectors did not know to look for them or save them. Of that estimated extant number, I suspect that the majority are in poor quality.I believe that this is one of only five examples, and only one of two undamaged examples, that I have had in 50 years! Facit 2024 value SEK 15,000 (4/2024 $1,500) and AFA 2023 value DKK 14,000 (4/2024 $2,100). Accompanied by a 1982 APS photo certificate and by a Jay Smith color image certificate with "Lifetime Guarantee". Missing from virtually all collections!

24, Facit #27, AFA 21 [1870 24 skilling Bicolor] Mint top margin BLOCK OF FOUR, with THREE STAMPS NEVER HINGED. F-VF / Fine centered stamps with excellent perforations for this issue (the perforations are always irregular on these line perforated 12.5 stamps). FULL height top margin. Wonderfully rich color for this issue and overall outstanding quality. Mint blocks of the Skilling Bicolors are extremely scarce; in the last 50 years many have been broken up to sell as single stamps! Valuing a part-NH block is difficult. The AFA 2017 (most recent edition) Danish Block Catalog values an ALL-STAMPS-HINGED block at DKK 24,000 (4/2024 $3600). This block contains THREE NH STAMPS. The 2023 AFA Catalog value for the four SINGLE stamps is NH 3 x DKK 10,000 and one Hinged at DKK 3,500; for a total AS SINGLES of DKK 33,500 (4/2024 $5,000). That $5,000 catalog value cannot be ignored because there is strong demand for the single stamps -- especially demand for NH examples which are "rare". Yet blocks are much scarcer than four singles.Accompanied by a 1986 Henrik Pollak b/w image certificate stating that the block is "genuine, mint, never hinged except the lower right stamp which has hinge marks, full original gum, fresh and with excellent perforation for this issue and without any faults." Also accompanied by a 1999 Lasse Nielsen color photo certificate stating "Mint with original gum, two stamps are unmounted mint. Genuine and without repairs. Excellent item." LN wrote that only two stamps are NH, but I (and Pollak) strongly disagree. Under high-power magnification, there is absolutely no indication of hinging or any other gum effect on three of the stamps. In light of that situation, this is also accompanied by a Jay Smith certificate with "Lifetime Guarantee" including guaranteeing the status of the hinging at the time of the certificate. An extremely scarce showpiece that would be a key item in a collection or exhibit. From the J.A. Farrington collection. Payment arrangements are possible.

Usually examples with this much of the hearts missing are offered as "completely missing hearts", but that would not be correct. Both varieties are are not transient variations caused by too much inking; they are constant flaws that developed due to wear of the cliches (and likely due very shallow relief of that area of the cliches at the time of cliche manufacture). Used with F-VF centering and fully dated 3 September 1907 cancellation. This variety only exists in a total of 5 positions in the C and D sheets of the first printing series (1905-1907). I believe that this example is one of the four matrix flaw positions. Used with VF centering and dated [6 or 16 or 26] June 1907 cancellation. The variety is clearly visible. 61 [1912 5 øre Numeral and Wavy Lines, Crown Watermark, Perf 12.75] Used BLOCK OF FOUR with F-VF centering, but with a couple minor bends as expected on a postally used block. Just as a point of interest (not affecting the price), this block shows an example of what is today called "revenue protection". The block was placed sideways on the envelope and received a machine cancellation which thus was mostly on two stamps (and a tiny bit on a third). Thus an observant postal clerk applied a handstamped cancel to fully cancel the other two stamps. Back then, it was "worth" the effort for postal clerks to do this, to prevent re-use of stamps, since the postage cost was "real money" to an ordinary person. While this is a "very common" stamp in Used condition, used blocks are very seldom offered!

Excellent, strong color. This stamp is accompanied by a Jay Smith color image certificate with lifetime guarantee (further details of the guarantee are available). Facit 2024 value SEK 4,500 (around $450 1/2024) and AFA 2023 value DKK 4,500 (around $675 1/2024). An attractive example of a stamp that is missing from most Danish collections. 15b [1870 16 skilling Sword and Scepter, Line Perf 12.5] Used with F-VF centering and fairly light 3-ring numeral cancellation. There are a couple shorter perforations on the left side -- mentioned only for complete accuracy -- but overall the perforations are remarkably clean and nice for this notoriously poorly perforated stamp. Accompanied by a 1985 Lasse Nielsen color photo certificate stating that this is Position 91 in the sheet, is genuine and without repair, and is a good example (a phrase he did not use very often) [translated]. This stamp is also accompanied by a Jay Smith color image certificate with lifetime guarantee (further details of the guarantee are available). Facit 2024 value SEK 12,000 (around $1,200 1/2024) and AFA 2023 value DKK 11,000 (around $1,650 1/2024). An attractive example of a stamp that is missing from virtually all Danish collections. Most of the examples I see in collections are in poor quality and/or damaged and/or repaired. This example is exceptionally nice. I have only had a very few examples of this scarce stamp in the last three decades! [C#02852-01-005]

39a, Facit #51, AFA #35x [1885 (Print 6, 1888) 10 øre Arms with SMALL Corner Numerals, Perf 14 x 13.5] Used with F-VF centering and neat "(KØBE)NHAVN G" cancellation. This error came about when three reserve cliches from the 1882 postal card issue were accidentally placed among the cliches for printing stamps. The three error cliches only exist from sheet positions 94, 96, and 97, all only in Printing 6. Interestingly, Scott and AFA list this stamp as varieties of the large corner numeral issues, however Facit lists it with the 5 and 20 øre small corner numeral stamps (Scott #35 and 37), considering it a "major" stamp, not a variety. Due to the plate layout vs the cliche size, and how the printers registered the perforations (selected a place on the sheet where the stamps would be well centered), the bottom row -- where all these come from -- is virtually always only Fine centered or worse. This example is F-VF centered, which is actually quite a bit nicer than usual for this "rare" item. A "rare" stamp that is missing from virtually all collections of Denmark. Facit 2024 value SEK 6,500 (about $650 1/2024); AFA 2023 value is DKK 4,500 (about $675 1/2024). An outstanding example of a stamp that is seldom offered. This is the first Used example that I have been able to offer in many years. This stamp is accompanied by a Jay Smith color image certificate with lifetime guarantee (further details of the guarantee are available). [C#02852-01-007]

24 [1870 48 skilling Bicolor, Line Perf 12.5] Used with Fine centering, but with expertly made filled thin spot repair (so good that you probably cannot find it). Neat #72 [Thisted] 3-ring numeral cancellation. Wonderful color for this stamp and unusually nice perforations for a line perforation 12.5 issue. If not for the expertly filled thin, this centering and appearance would otherwise sell for $190!

Scott #O7 Blue, Plate Variety [1875 4 øre blue Official, Perforation 14 x 13.5] Used with VF centering and 1901 cancellation (thus from a later printing). This unusual example bears a very obvious plate variety: Heavily dented and rumpled left frame line along the top 5 mm. This variety is neither listed by AFA nor is it listed by Regeling in Service Stamps of Denmark 1871-1923 (the primary handbook on the Official stamps). Regeling either missed seeing this large plate variety (which is very unlikely as it is more obvious than virtually any of the plate varieties that have been recorded) or the major cliche damage was quickly noticed by the printers and the cliche was quickly repaired and replaced -- and Regeling did not have an example of it (from the limited set of sheets which are in the Postal Museum) and thus he did not know about it to list it. If the latter situation is true, then this is a very scarce variety indeed! Quite an interesting and special stamp.

Semi-Official Airmail Stamp: 1918 5 Kr "DANSK LUFTBEFORDRING KØBENHAVN - SKAGEN" picturing bi-plane with Danish flags and map of Denmark with route of the flight. Very attractive design! In the book by Lüning, "The History of Airmail in Scandinavia", the author states that most of the stamps were sold for [the benefit of] charity and were canceled..." This is such an example, from a block of four that had fallen apart, canceled "BØRNESHJÆLPSDAGEN / KØBENHAVN / 14 MAJ 1920" [Childrens Help Day / Copenhagen / 14 May 1920], still with gum. Despite the comment that "most" of the stamps were canceled in such a manner, they are actually very seldom seen -- I have seen ten times as many Mint examples! This is only the second or third time in 49 years that I have been able to offer canceled examples (all have had a charity cancel) of this beautiful semi-official airmail stamp. [Mint Hinged examples quickly sell for $65-70 each!] Canceled with VF centering.
135 [1915 5 Kr Post Office Building, Crosses Watermark] Mint with Average centering, but regummed. The perforations on the right side just touch the design. Accompanied by a 2023 Møller color image certificate stating "The stamp is genuine and without repair, regummed." Bright color and paper, with crisp engraving impression. It looks great if you do not mind the centering. By comparison, this exact centering if not regummed would be $170; Fine OG would be $340 and F-VF OG would be $430! This example offered at a huge savings; the previous owner told me that the certificate cost him $50 (presumably including mailing, insurance, etc.)! A very low-priced example!

39c PAIR Containing Scott #39a. Facit #51v2, AFA #35x [1885 (Print 6, 1888) 10 øre Arms with SMALL Corner Numerals, Perf 14 x 13.5] Mint hinged with Just-Fine centering. Original gum, slightly disturbed, with hinge remnant in place to help stabilize the pair. Horizontal PAIR of Scott #39 and #39a (thus Scott #39c pair). The #39a, small corner numerals stamp, is on the right, and is from plate position 96. This pair is INTACT, but with some perforation separation, with the remaining intact perforations reinforced by a hinge remnant. This error came about when three reserve cliches from the 1882 postal card issue were accidentally placed among the cliches for printing stamps. The three error cliches exist from sheet positions 94, 96, and 97, all only in Printing 6. The three positions can be discerned by small details in the printing impression and by the small irregularities in the perforation teeth. The crisp paper and the fine, large-hole perforations result in pairs / multiples being fragile, with the consequence that most pairs have fallen apart many a very long time ago. Interestingly, Scott and AFA list this stamp as varieties of the large corner numeral issues, however Facit lists it with the 5 and 20 øre small corner numeral stamps (Scott #35 and 37). Due to the plate layout vs the cliche size, and how the printers registered the perforations (selected a place on the sheet where the stamps would be well centered), the bottom row -- where all these come from -- is virtually always only Fine centered or worse. This example is Just Fine centered, which is actually typical for this item. The perforations of the left stamp (normal 39) barely clear the design, but the right stamp (the 39a variety) is Fine with perforations completely clearing the design. A "rare" item that is missing from virtually all collections of Denmark. Facit 2024 value SEK 5000 (about $500 10/2023); AFA 2023 value is DKK 4000 (about $600 10/2023); and Scott 2023 value is $600. This pair is much scarcer than those catalog values would suggest. Accompanied by a Jay Smith certificate with "lifetime" guarantee.

31 Print 3b. Facit #34cc variety. AFA #28.3b variety. [1875 20 øre Bicolor, Perf 14 x 13.5] Used with Fine centering and very light cancellation, but one short perf tooth. OVAL VARIETY "white spot before P" is very clear. Printing 3 is interesting because it is listed as 3a and 3b, with two different colors, thus one would think it would be divided into two different printings. That this is printing 3b is confirmed by a small note in Lasse Nielsen handwriting (I had submitted the stamp to him ca.2010). There is additional information in the AFA Specialized 2016 regarding the frames from plates A and B, but I have not (yet?) found that information presented by Lasse Nielsen. The oval variety is clear and according to the Lasse Nielsen handbook, it can only be Oval Flaw 62 (OF.62). However, the Nielsen handbook does not state the plate position of OF.62 in Printing 3a or 3b -- I am not sure if this is simply because the position was not known or if it is because examples of OF.62 on printing 3b had not been observed. An attractive example of an interesting stamp.

Boom #1.7 VARIETY 2, Facit #H6 variety, AFA #HD1y variety, MOUNTED BY TOP MARGINS (UPRIGHT) [1929 semi-postal Cancer; contains panes Scott #B3a 2x VF/F-VF; B4a x2 VF/F-VF; B5a XF-Superb] NH VF complete booklet in excellent quality. As usual, the gum of the panes is slightly aged from being against the interleaving, but that is completely typical. Interestingly, neither AFA nor Facit list even mention that this booklet exists mounted by top vs bottom margins; while the quantities produced were probably about equal (and Boom prices them equally), in my experience, the type mounted by bottom margins is less often seen. The blue 25 øre pane includes the AFA-listed plate variety "white spot in bend of snake" (AFA #180y; as a single NH stamp AFA value is DKK 900!). Both Boom and AFA list and price the booklet with this plate variety; AFA Specialized 2016 (most recent edition) DKK 2000 (approx US$300 6/2023). [Both the AFA #180x and #180y plate varieties exist only in the top row of the sheet, in positions 4 and 6 respectively, thus in booklets is only found in top-margin-mounted booklets.] An attractive example with the gold on dark red leather-like cover -- certainly an unusual production for a stamp booklet in 1929! The "key" Danish airmail stamp; such attractive examples are difficult to find.

C6-10 [1934 Airmail set] Used set with XF / Superb centering and neat, light, mostly corner cancellations that leave the design "face free". While the centering of some stamps is not perfect, these are by far the nicest examples I have seen in quite some time. Also, this set is quite difficult to find with such neat, light cancellations. This is not a "scarce" issue and finding some well-centered examples may not be terribly difficult, but finding or assembling such a nice set, that is also so light canceled, is quite a challenge (because there are always at least a couple that just do not measure up).

2a [1851 4 RBS -- First Printing -- First Danish Stamp! "Ferslew" Print with engraved burelage] Facit #2I in LIGHT RED BROWN. Used XF with four large to very large margins. The impression of this stamp is unusual because in the nearly-solid center around the crown, the impression has a wavy-line appearance because of the engraved burelage. The typical mute cancel also shows the wavy-line impression. The vast majority of examples of the Ferslew printing (i.e. with engraved burelage) are Chocolate Brown, however, this example is quite exceptional with a Light Red Brown color. Very attractive with delicate color and great overall appearance!
2b YELLOW BROWN, Facit #2IVa, AFA #1IIIa [1851 4 RBS Thiele Print III (1854) with typographed burelage] Used XF with four large to huge margins. AFA-listed PLATE VARIETY "short horizontal line in top right margin outside of frame line" from Plate IV, Position 6 (DKK 200 premium value). Fresh color and attractive overall appearance, with lightly struck numeral cancellation (looks like it might be "5"). A very nice example.

Expert handstamp on reverse: "I OSPER BPP" indicating Thiele I printing, identified by Horst Osper, accredited by the BPP 1991-2005. Q3 [1919 10 øre red Christian X "POSTFÆRGE" postal ferry overprint] Mint, extremely lightly hinged, with XF centering. SHIFTED OVERPRINT variety: Shifted to the left so that the "P" is fully in the left margin of the stamp. While one might think that such shifted overprint varieties are common, they are actually very seldom seen -- the printer was quite accurate! They may not add a lot of value to such a stamp, but they sure make it more interesting. This example of the basic stamp is outstanding, with brilliant color, great centering, perfect perforations, and with a hinge mark so light that the previous owner was sure it was never hinged!

Q7 [1920 50 øre wine red and black Christian X, "POSTFÆRGE" postal ferry overprint] Mint, extremely lightly hinged, with VF centering. An remarkably fresh and attractive example with excellent centering, strong color, perfect perforations, and a hinge mark so light that the previous owner was sure it was NH. The underlying stamp had eight printings, but only two of those printings were overprinted "POSTFÆRGE". However, though not described even in the AFA Specialized Catalog, the two printings with overprints do have different appearance. This one has a Brownish Wine Red frame with slightly off-white paper. The other one has a more Reddish Wine Red frame color and whiter paper. The scarcity of each is similar, but nicely centered examples of this one (Brownish Wine Red frame) seem to be much scarcer. Priced only as the basic stamp -- which itself is missing from most collections.

24 [1870 48 sk Bicolor] Used with F-VF centering and better than usual perforations for this issue. Remarkably light (KJØBEN)HAVN town cancellation -- the cancellation is unusually nice for an issue that was often used for parcel mail. Unusally strong and bright color of both oval and frame. An excellent example! Accompanied by S. Grønlund 1973 certificate -- yes an old certificate, but I have carefully examined the stamp and I confirm and guarantee that it is completely genuine and without defects or repairs. The expertizer made special note of "god farve og leg stempel": Good color and light cancellation. This stamp is not often seen in such attractive quality!

42c INVERTED FRAME [1903 4 øre Bicolor, Perf 12.75, Large Crown Watermark] Used SUPERB with extremely light cancellation. This is an greatly under-rated and under-valued stamp that is missing from most collections. "Rare" in such nice quality! This is surely the nicest Used example I have had in 49 years.
51c INVERTED FRAME, Printing 12-13 [1903 50 øre Bicolor Perf 12.75, Large Watermark] Used with F-VF+ centering and with neat fully dated ODENSE 10 February 1905 cancellation that allows clear showing the characteristics of the inverted frame. Inverted frames exist in three (11-13) of the four printings with this watermark, in positions 51 and 91-100. B2 [1921 "+10+" overprinted surcharge on 20 øre Sønderborg Castle, South Jutland Reunion; Red Cross semi-postal] Used VF 4-block with neat central postmark. It is difficult to be 100% sure due to the cancellation, but the upper left stamp appears to have the well-known AFA-listed 121x variety "missing white dot in 0 of 20" that occurs in position 2 of every plate/sheet. If that is the case, then this block contains sheet positions 2-3/12-13 and with some research into the plating of the underlying stamp it should be possible to confirm those plate positions. If this contains the variety, the variety alone is valued by AFA 2023 at DKK 1200 = $165 (10/2022). However, even nice used singles of this stamp are now scarce. Facit 2022 PER-STAMP value is SEK 600 and AFA 2023 is DKK 600 = $84 each (10/2022) for ordinary quality. Used blocks are seldom seen. Q17 Facit Type III / AFA Type II, Facit #PF20b, AFA #PF21a [1939 10 øre brown engraved Numeral, second type issued] Used XF 4-block with neat, proper cancellation. Multiples are hard to find so well centered. The cancellation appears to be dated 31 DEC 1938 which may make this an extremely important item. I say "appears to be" because while the "31" and the "38" are extremely clear, the other parts are hard to read. However, the catalogs state that this stamp was not issued until March 1939... but that is not actually correct. In his 1962 handbook on the Postfærge stamps, Plovst stated [translated] that [at that time] the earliest recorded cancellation on this stamp [AFA Type II] was 22 March 1939 ... but that ... the stamps were submitted to the printer for overprinting on 9 November 1938 ... leaving open the possibility of a much earlier cancellation date. It is apparently not known when the AFA Type II stamps were actually distributed or first used. Based on the large quantities of 10 øre stamps of this type, the other brown type, and the violet 10 øre stamps issued 27 April 1939, it is completely reasonable that at least some of this type were placed into use well before March 1939. I am not aware of any more current information on the earliest recorded cancellation on this stamp, but the AFA and Facit catalogs still use "March 1939" as the first use. Just to be completely clear, this block is of the AFA Type II stamps; there is no doubt about that. This block could (or not) bear the earliest recorded cancellation date which could make it a very important item indeed, especially if the earliest recorded date has not moved back since 1962.

Q4 [1919 15 øre lilac Christian X] Used with F-VF centering and excellent strike (for this) of the early "AGGERSUND FÆRGERI" (Aggersund Ferry) Crown and Posthorn violet cancellation with serifed letters and narrow spacing between the rings. It is often forgotten that these stamps were used only on a few ferry lines. In this case, the use on the ferry from Aggersund to Løgstør -- in the north of Denmark (200 km from most of the later use on the west coast between Esbjerg and Fanø) was the only use of a Crown and Posthorn style cancellation on the Postfærge stamps. While this cancellation was normally used in the early period, examples this complete and clearly struck are seldom offered.

Q4 [1919 15 øre lilac Christian X] Used 4-Block with Fine centering and neat strikes of the violet, straight-line proper cancellation. There were three types of straight-line "Fanø-Esbjerg Færgeri" cancellations with SERIFED LETTERS; this is the type with the smallest letters and shortest total length, about 38 mm. This example shows the cancellation about as clearly and neatly as one can find struck on stamps. A nice example of a scarce multiple with the bonus of an early type of cancellation. Listed by the 2017 (most recent at this writing) AFA Block Catalog at DKK 1500 (about $240 5/2022) for the most common color/printing without regard for the early cancellation.

Even though these stamps were used in quantity for heavy shipments, today it is quite hard to find blocks larger than four stamps. Individual stamps sell for $45 (VF) and $31.50 (F-VF). These nine stamps total approximately $340 as singles. An impressive block in great quality offered for less than the break-up value.

98 LIGHT YELLOW [1918 7 øre "orange to yellow" Christian X] Used with VF-XF centering and fully dated 25 October 1919 cancellation. (The "6-7..." in the cancel refers to 6-7 time block; the AM or PM indicator is not visible on this example.) Up to and including in the 1981-1982 AFA Specialized Catalog, this color was listed as AFA #98a and both Mint and Used examples were priced at approximately TEN TIMES the value of the normal range of orange colors. After that 1981-82, the listing was consolidated and #98a was dropped. However, this color does exist; it is not just a faded ink color. There is a space for this yellow color in many European-made albums. A very nice example of a scarce stamp, with a fully dated cancellation!

98 PALE YELLOW-ORANGE [1918 7 øre "orange to yellow" Christian X] Used with XF centering and faint 1919 cancellation (that appears to be 22 January 1919, but I cannot be positive). After that 1981-82, the listing was consolidated and #98a was dropped. Most collectors, never having actually seen the Light Yellow color, would likely consider this to be the Yellow color previously listed by AFA. 99 [1920 8 øre gray Christian X] BLOCK OF FOUR, Used with F-VF centering, with crisp and attractive, well-centered 27 January 1921 "KJØBENHAVN / 9," single-ring cancellation. Because this stamp was issued specifically for the local post card rate, it was quite unusual for it to be used in multiples (at least not until at least several years later -- this block was used during the initial rate period). Canceled blocks of the King Christian X issue are seldom this attractive. The AFA 2017 (most recent edition) 4-Block Catalog lists this stamp in a canceled 4-block at DKK 250, however that is little more than four singles and it does not take into account when it was used; an early example, such as this one, is much scarcer. An exceptional example!

J3 YELLOW, Rough Perforation Variety [1921 Postage Due "PORTO" overprint on 7 øre Christian X] Used with Superb centering and very neat cancellation. This "yellow" color used to be catalog-listed and it is a legitimate color/printing, not the result of fading. However, for reasons not known to me, it is no longer listed in the catalogs, but there are still spaces for it in many of the European-made albums. Perfect centering! 19b INVERTED FRAME [1871 8 skilling Bicolor] Used with F-VF+ centering and neat numeral cancellation, but with repaired very small tear in top margin (above N of DANMARK). Looks perfectly fine without a magnifying glass. This a very scarce Inverted Frame, seldom offered in any quality. It exists from only one position (90) in the sheet, only from the 2nd and 3rd printings (there were only four printings). The 2020 Facit value is either SEK 10,000 or 11,000 ($1200 or $1320 [3/21]) depending upon which printing. The cancellation is well clear of both the upper left and lower right corners, thus it is absolutely clear that it is an inverted frame. Scott #17, AFA #17, Facit #21a. Printing 1. [1871 3 skilling Bicolor] Mint with original gum, extremely lightly hinged, with Fine+ centering that others might grade as F-VF. Regardless of the centering, this example is incredibly fresh -- mint examples of the Skilling Bicolors are really quite scarce in such fresh quality. Strong colors, perfect perforations, terrific original gum. Accompanied by a 1985 Carl Aage Møller b/w photo certificate that even comments on the lightness of the hinge mark. This first printing is at the scarcest end of the spectrum of the five printings. Facit 2020 value SEK 2500 or about $300 [2/2021] and AFA 2021 value DKK 2500 or about $410 [2/2021]. "NEPA / HORSENS 1936": NH VF Stamp show overprint in VIOLET in blank gutter above Scott #248 [1935 10 øre H.C. Andersen] The gutter results from the special sheet layout used to make booklet panes. The "overprint" pictures a white horse in front of a tree, the symbol for the city of Horsens, Denmark. The special booklet-making sheets from this stamp issue could be purchased by the public; the stamp show organizers printed their overprint, by typography / letterpress without official cooperation. A very popular, unusual in philately, and sought-after item. Though these NEPA items are seen from time to time, they are uncommon.

"NEPA / HORSENS 1936" ONE 10-BLOCK (w/five pairs): NH VF Stamp show overprint in VIOLET in blank gutter above Scott #248 [1935 10 øre H.C. A very popular, unusual in philately, and sought-after item. Though these NEPA items are seen from time to time, they are uncommon. A recent small find of these blocks seems to indicate that the overprinting plate printed only five at a time; each of the five positions has small, but unique, characteristics. I have not found any examples that do not match one of these five positions.

52c, Facit #45bb, AFA #31Cy [1903 100 øre Bicolor, Perforation 12.75, Large Crown Watermark, Inverted Frame] Used with F-VF centering and a very clear, well-centered and upright "KJØBENHAVN B / 2 POST" single-ring cancellation. The cancellation is unusual in that this high denomination stamp was often used for parcels and usually received multiple cancellation strikes -- it is unusual, especially for the inverted frame stamp, to find an example with a single, neat, mostly full cancellation strike. The stamp clearly has an inverted frame; this can be partially seen at the top left as usual, but also if the stamp is rotated 180 degrees it looks like a normal frame, which when positioned upside down, means that it is an inverted frame stamp. Certainly one of the scarcest of the Watermark Large Crown Bicolors and is on most want lists. AFA 2021 value DKK 2000 = US$320.

RE12 pair [1928 Chevrolet Lastvogn emblem and text, 5 øre brown] Used F-VF, with neat, light proper type of cancellation (date appears to be 1928). A scarce Danish advertising pair that is quite a bit harder to find in good condition than the catalog value suggests. AFA 2021 DKK 2800 = $450.
214 [1930 15 øre red Christian X 60th Birthday] Lower left PLATE BLOCK "No 389 I". NEVER HINGED with Superb centering. While this has not been hinged, there are a couple very small gum disturbance spots in the selvage and one tiny such spot on the lower left stamp, thus I count that stamp as hinged. Strong perforations and wonderfully fresh appearance. Plate blocks of this attractive issue are seldom available. Priced at about the total value of the Superb NH 3x singles and one as hinged (this is a scarcer stamp in NH condition).

306a variety, Facit #329bv, DOUBLED DESIGNERS NAME [1949 15 øre green Frederik IX, Type III in all catalogs (hollow lines in coat)] NH VF horizontal pair with the variety stamp on the right side. The "VIGGO BANG del." (the name of the stamp designer) is doubled. The philatelic term is "re-entry" when on an engraved stamp -- when the plate was made from the master die, this area was accidentally impressed twice. This variety comes from position 55 in every second sheet. Despite being 1 our of every 200 stamps printed, this variety is rarely offered; it has been many years since I have been able to offer a Mint NH (or Hinged) example. It is listed by Facit and by SAVA (the Danish plate variety catalog), but very strangely it is not listed (yet) in the AFA Specialized -- even though it is a very obvious and interesting variety.

223d, 229b, 238Al Set [1937 Dybbøl Mill set of panes, see Scott #B6-8] Mint (lower stamps NH) VF/XF set of three 4-blocks (i.e. the booklet panes without the mounting tabs; this is the way they are shown in many albums). Extremely lightly hinged on the top two stamps only. 223d, the green 5 øre block, contains Scott #223a, the scarce grayish-green stamp; this is the only source of that stamp -- this example of 223a is NH XF. The brown 10 øre block contains the AFA Type IA / Facit Type II of Scott #229, the 10 øre brown Wavy-Line issue; a scarcer stamp -- this example is XF. The red 15 øre block contains Facit #227a, the "Fine pearls in crown", which is a scarce stamp in its own right -- this example is NH VF. While the 5 øre block is in great demand for the single Wavy-Line #223a stamp, the 15 øre block is actually much less often seen and the 10 øre block is greatly under-rated. 66 [1904 20 øre blue Christian IX] SET OF TWO Mint Fine 4-BLOCKS in two distinctly different color shades: Dark Blue and Medium Blue with blue-toned paper. The darker block has one stamp (upper right) with tiny thin speck. The blue-toned-paper block is very interesting with many copper-plate-engraved plate scratches bending in all directions, likely caused by hand-wiping the plate too hard with an abrasive cloth (and probably significantly shortening the life of the plate); this is not often seen so prominently. Priced at only the value of 7 Mint Fine stamps!
