Danish West Indies: Gallery: Select Stamps Scott #23-36
A selection of especially attractive and interesting seldom-offered items. All are available for approval viewing. Scott numbers have been used unless otherwise mentioned.
27 Plate Variety [1902 2 on 3 cent Bicolor Bold Surcharge, Inverted Frame] Mint, extremely lightly hinged, with F-VF centering. PLATE VARIETY from Position 31 of this printing, but despite being at least as obvious as some of the other varieties, it is not (yet) catalog listed: White hook on the underside of the D of DISKE and white spot to upper left of large 3. This variety is clearly documented in the Lasse Nielsen Bicolor handbook (in Volume 3) as variety OF 9. With only 350 sheets printed with this overprint, only 350 examples of this plate variety originally existed with this overprint. This particular stamp seemed to have been more subject than usual to high losses due to tropical staining, perhaps due to postal storage methods. Thus I suspect that, at most, less than 150-200 examples of this stamp can still exist today; and probably only, at most, half that number in Mint (or NH) condition still exist. Because this variety has not been well-cataloged, the quantity of surviving examples could be much smaller.

36 [1905 50 bit Christian IX] Used, Fine+ centered, 4-BLOCK with sharp FREDERIKSTED 13 July 1910 cancellations. This stamp is quite scarce as a nice used block without any defects; I am not aware of any modern catalog that prices DWI used blocks, but this one would list high. Very attractive and very seldom offered.
