Confederate States of America. The stamps of CSA are fun to collect and a challenge to find. Please keep in mind that these stamps were printed and used, and later stored, under difficult and crude conditions. Quality standards are not the same for CSA stamps as they are for most other stamps. Due to climatic conditions the effects of aging are typically seen. CSA Scott #3 [1862 2c LIGHT GREEN Andrew Jackson] Mint Superb with huge, even margins and clear impression (for this), without gum as typical. This is a stamp issue that is seldom found in even VF quality but this is a truly wonderful example in exceptionally nice quality. Certainly the nicest looking example I have had in 46 years and I do not recall seeing a nicer looking example anywhere else. (Scott 2021 value is $1000 for "VF" quality without gum; this is much nicer!)

CSA Scott #4b Stone 2 Light Milky Blue [1861 5c Blue Jefferson Davis] Used with F-VF appearance. Three ample to large margins; fourth margin just touching at top. Tiny margin crease on right; upper right corner worn with creases. Black North Carolina town cancellation: "...STON / NC". Though with the typical small faults, this is a nice looking example with the unusual light milky blue color. (Scott 2024 $200.)

CSA Scott #7 (CSA #7R) [1862 5c blue Jefferson Davis, Richmond Printing on Local Paper but with London ink] Mint with VF centering and ample to large margins, and full original gum. Based on the extremely high quality of the printing impression of this example, it looks like the London printing. However, the paper is of medium thickness (not thin) -- but just as white as the London paper -- and the gum is yellowish and is quite thick and crackly (not thin, white, and smooth). I find "in between" examples such as this to be quite interesting. Outstanding appearance. (Scott unfortunately lists the local paper version in the Varieties section below #7 instead of in the main #7 listing with a sub-number [I have suggested that this be changed]; Mint value WITHOUT gum is $50; this is much nicer with full original gum.)

CSA Scott #7 (CSA #7L) [1862 5c blue Jefferson Davis, Richmond Printing on London Paper, with Local Gum] HORIZONTAL PAIR. Mint, full original gum with hinge remnant, VF appearance with ample to large margins, but with a couple creases. The printing quality is rough with less detail, typical of later (but still on London paper) Richmond printings. The ink color is slightly darker than the London color. The gum is local: in this case it is high quality but yellow, though fairly evenly applied. The paper is high quality, thin and white, with the calendered surface of London paper. An interesting "in between" example of the evolving production. An interesting printing variety with a "hickey" on the right stamp next to the ear. This was caused by a piece of foreign matter on the plate, which printed as a small spot, but because of the raised area of that foreign matter it results in an unprinted "halo" around the spot.

CSA Scott #7 (CSA #7R) [1862 5c blue Jefferson Davis, Richmond Printing, Local Paper and Local Ink] Used with F-VF appearance. Margins are very large at left, but touching at top, irregular at right, and looks ample at bottom, but there is a cut into the design parallel to the bottom margin. Very neat, light, but looks correct, corner, black town cancellation. The printing impression is typically (for the later Richmond printings) rough. The color is unusually Light Blue. The paper is of medium thickness (not thin) and is white, but is not smooth (not calendered). Very nice appearance for a Richmond Printing on Local Paper, but priced low because of the margins. (Scott unfortunately lists the Local Paper version in the Varieties section below #7 instead of in the main #7 listing with a sub-number [I have suggested that this be changed]; value is $55.)

CSA Scott #7 (CSA #7R) [1862 5c blue Jefferson Davis, Richmond Printing, Local Paper and Local Ink] Used with Average-Fine appearance. Margins are very large at left and top, but irregular and into the design on right and bottom. margin. Very neat, light, but looks correct, corner, blue town cancellation. The printing impression is typically (for the later Richmond printings) rough. The color is unusually Light Blue. The paper is extremely thin and is white, but is not smooth (not calendered), thus not London paper. An interesting and probably easily plateable variety: most of the bottom outer frame line is missing (the part that would be visible; the other part is cut off because of the margin). Nice appearance for a Richmond Printing on Local Paper, but priced low because of the margins. (Scott unfortunately lists the Local Paper version in the Varieties section below #7 instead of in the main #7 listing with a sub-number [I have suggested that this be changed]; value is $55. Scott also unfortunately describes all the local papers as thick, which is not a correct statement; a few local papers were very thin, like this example.)

CSA Scott #7 (7Ra) [1862 5c LIGHT BLUE Jefferson Davis, Richmond Printing on LOCAL THICK PAPER] HORIZONTAL PAIR, Used with neat single-line manuscript cancellation. Left stamp cut into (see image), but right stamp has four full margins. No defects. Scott lists "Local Paper (Thick)" (no sub-number) with a 2021 value FOR SINGLES of $50 Mint (without gum) and $55 Used. While the manuscript cancellation looks okay to me, there can never be a guarantee of a manuscript cancel in a situation like this. This example is fairly LIGHT BLUE, which is rather unusual for this. A very nice item at a great price.

An outstanding example with highly detailed proof-like impression and fresh overall appearance. (Scott 2024 value $18 for typical NO-gum examples; this is much nicer.)
