18, Facit 16a, Yellow-Brown and Greenish Blue [1901 4 Cent Bicolor, Perf 12.75, Normal Frame] Used horizontal PAIR with VF centering (right stamp with rounded corner perf) and nearly complete CHRISTIANSTED 6 July 1905 cancellation. On small piece with left stamp "marked off" by red crayon. This type of marking-off is usually seen when an invalid stamp has been used (such as an obsolete / demonetized stamp, foreign stamp, charity label, or a re-used stamp). In this case, the stamps were valid postage -- I can only guess that the marked-off stamp was considered excess (overpaid) and the postal clerk was "preserving" it for future use by marking it off. I do not recall previously seeing this type of situation from DWI or any country [I welcome further information]. Very attractive and interesting!

18, Facit 16a, Yellow-Brown and Greenish Blue [1901 4 Cent Bicolor, Perf 12.75, Normal Frame] Used with F-VF+ centering and remarkably light, neat corner cancellation. Perfect perforations and very bright color. While "only" F-VF+ centered, stamps of this issue are rarely seen with neat and light cancellations (corner cancellations were NOT the norm and were actually contrary to regulations).

United States, New York: "PAQU(EBOT) / N.Y. (... DIV)" nicely struck New York incoming ship mail 2-line cancellation which was used on uncanceled mail, presumably mailed on board ship. On Scott #18 Clear Blue Printing [1901 4 cent Bicolor, Perf 12.75, Normal Frame] with VF+ centering and bright color. This example is the Second (Perf 12.75) Printing with Clear Blue center color. When complete (it cannot fit on a single stamp) this cancellation is in the 2-line format "PAQUEBOT / (N.Y. 2D DIV.)" with the "2D" being other possible numbers and letters. This cancellation is usually only seen on stamps in the 1900-1910 era. Attractive and scarce.

18, Facit #16b, AFA #7B.4 Brownish Yellow and Clear Blue [1901 4 Cent Bicolor, Perf 12.75, Normal Frame, 1902 second printing of this perforation] Used with F-VF++ centering and nearly full, but very light CHRISTIA(NSTED) cancellation. Wonderfully fresh and bright; one of the strongest and cleanest-color clear blue examples that I have seen in a long time. This is the scarcer of the two printings of this perforation (in both Mint and Used) and such nice examples are hard to find.

United States, New York: "PAQUE(BOT) / (...) DIV" nicely struck New York incoming ship mail 2-line cancellation which was used on uncanceled mail, presumably mailed on board ship. On Scott #18b [1901 4 cent Bicolor, Perf 12.75, INVERTED FRAME] with F-VF centering and three huge margins. Attractive and scarce -- and "rare" on this INVERTED FRAME stamp. The basic used stamp with a normal cancellation would sell quickly for $110.

18b INVERTED FRAME, Facit #16bv2, AFA 2016 Specialized #7By Print 4, Positions 91-100, Brownish Yellow and Clear Blue [1901 4 Cent Bicolor, Perf 12.75, Inverted Frame, the 1902 second printing of this perforation] Used with Fine centering and neat cancellation. An attractive example with excellent perforations and clearly visible inverted frame. THIS stamp is from the second of the two printings of the Perf 12.75 4-cent stamps (the 4th overall printing of all the 4 cent Bicolors, counting both perforations). Inverted frame stamps exist from both of the Perf 12.75 printings. In the first Perf 12.75 printing, the inverted frame exists ONLY from position 51 and has visible characteristics (in addition to color) that separate it from the position 51 inverted frame stamps that exist in the second Perf 12.75 printing (clear blue center color). THIS STAMP with inverted frame is from the latter printing, from sheet positions 91-100, those being the more "common" (but still quite hard to find) 4 cent inverted frames (and correspond to what Scott lists as #18b). The Facit 2022 value is SEK 1200 for Used. A nice example of a stamp missing from most collections.

20 Plate Variety [1901 10 cent Bicolor, Perf 12.75] Mint, extremely lightly hinged, with F-VF+ centering (which most people might call VF). Catalog-listed PLATE VARIETY AFA #11Bv and Facit #18v16 (+ SEK 350): White line extending to the right from the base of E of VEST. Though it does not change the financial value, this also has a WATERMARK VARIETY; the crown watermark is evenly split with 50% of the watermark to the left and to the right. Wonderfully fresh with perfect perforations and bright colors. Such nice examples are hard to find. A key stamp, even without the variety, that is missing from most collections.

18a, scarcer Green-Blue Printing [1901 4 Cent Perf 12.75 Bicolor] Average centered BISECT (upper left corner) on full cover with ST. THOMAS 24 January 1903 cancel (fifth day of use), used locally. Though the stamp is not well centered, every other aspect is excellent.
